Museo y Conjunto Arqueologico Romano, Medina Sidonia

Reviewed By SMU1963 - London, United Kingdom

The entrance covers the actual museum, which has an incredible array of artefacts as well as a large section of the Ancient Roman ruins. However, it also covers a second archeological site further into the town, of a section of Ancient Roman road and pavement - complete with two game boards carved into the pavement. The staff close the main building to lead you up to the second. There are presumably few visitors, which is a shame. We were delightfully surprised at the standard and quality of the two parts. The man on the desk was wonderfully helpful and polite. A little gem of a place.

Bodegas Barbadillo

The Manzanilla Museum opens the door to centuries of wine-making history at Bodegas Barbadillo. Discover a history that dates back to 1821, when the Barbadillo family bottled its first manzanilla, as secrets that ancient barrels have carefully guarded over the years are revealed. A visit to the museum and a walk through the cellars highlight mysteries that make sherry production a universally unique process. Understand why sherry and wine from The Sherry Region.are a way of life, a world, a culture. The pure essence of our land and of our roots.

About 10 minute walk from the main square (all uphill!), easy to find and open over Christmas. The English tour was at 11am, about an hour, really informative and the tour brings you into the storage area with all the barrels where there is a wonderful smell of sherry. They also make wine and sparkling wine and as my wife isn’t a sherry drinker she was delighted that these were at the tasting at the end too. Large gift shop with all their bottles available to buy but unfortunately with the 100ml flying restrictions we couldn’t buy any. We’ve done wine tasting tours all around the world and a €10 charge per person is certainly the most expensive we’ve ever come across.
