Things to do in Portland, Maine (ME): The Best Gear Rentals

September 23, 2021 Terina Blouin

From ornate mansions to ocean views, this charming city - the largest in Maine - will enchant you. Saunter down the brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets of the revitalized Old Port District, where you can browse through bookstores, explore craft shops and eat to your heart's content. Visit the Portland Head Light, which dates back to 1791, and is the oldest lighthouse still in continuous use in the U.S. The great poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is the city's native son, and you can visit his childhood home, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House. With kids in hand, enjoy the highly interactive Children's Museum of Maine. And then go next door to the calmer Portland Museum of Art, a small, but eclectic museum with Impressionist works, Maine landscapes by Homer and Wyeth and other collections. Land or sea is an option here, so if you're tired of the street life, take one of the popular scenic cruises or whale watches, or hop on a ferry to the islands in Casco Bay. At the end of the day, and without kids in hand, unwind and rest your tired feet at one of the city's brewpubs.

Portland Paddle

Portland Paddle offers sea kayak and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) rentals, tours and lessons. We provide paddling adventures for all skill levels, including complete beginners. We send out two-hour sunset kayak tours every evening and half-day kayak tours three mornings each week. Experienced paddlers can rent kayaks or SUPs and explore the Maine Island Trail. We're located at the East End Beach a short drive or walk from downtown Portland. Our site on the waterfront of Casco Bay is perfectly situated for paddling. Dozens of interesting islands are nearby and the waters near the beach are relatively calm and protected. We are a seasonal business open from mid-May to mid-October. Our hours may vary in the spring and fall.

We rented bikes for everyone for the week and they were very accommodating and helpful with a nice selection of baseline bikes for the children and they indulged me in an awesome full suspension fat bike. The staff was knowledgeable in helping us select the correct bikes and safety testing them, providing help putting them into the van and did not nickel and dime us when we brought one back missing the gear shifter cover. Stress-free and worry free rental of nice Trek bikes. I would recommend for bicycle rentals in the area (we were staying in south portland).

The owner of PEAKS ISLAND GOLF CART RENTALS had already closed for the day when I called and texted and emailed her. She responded that her business opens at 10:00 a.m. and that all of her golf carts had already been rented out for today, beginning at 10:00! After taking a deep breath and sighing a bit, I asked if she would mind calling me so we could work things out. She agreed and called me a while later. She explained that she is light-handed for help, due to this COVID thing and could not see how she would be able to help me. My suggestion was simple: I need the golf cart, ONLY ONE, for two hours, beginning at 8:00 in the morning. I promised that if she would take my credit card over the phone last night, and if she would tell me where the cart would be and where she would hide the key, that my clients and I would pick up the cart at 8:15, view the properties I was intending to show them, and return the cart ALL BEFORE 10:00 a.m. Thankfully, she was willing to take a chance on me and everything worked out as planned. Had the owner not been willing to take a chance on me and adapt her schedule to accommodate ours, the entire trip would have had to be scrapped and I might have lost clients in the process. Again, MAINE PEOPLE HAVE AN INCREDDIBLE WORK ETHIC and for this I am profoundly grateful!
