Elmer was without question the best tour guide I have ever had for a tour of ancient ruins. I have been to Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat and several other sites around the world with guides but Elmers knowledge of Tikal surpassed them all. His English is incredible too, being very easy to understand. If you are touring Tikal I highly recommend his services.

We stayed at Barcelo hotel in Guatemala City. We took hotel taxi and did the Chichicastenango market and Lake Atitlan in one day. It is a long drive but there is plenty to watch and see on the way. We loved the people, colors, hand made artifacts and food in the market. We stopped at Santo Tomas Church in the market. We then drove down to Solola, saw local men in wonderful costumes on the way. We took a trip over lake Atitlan with public boat. Lake Atitlan surrounded by mountains and volcanoes has seen generations of mayans and local tribes live, grow and evolve, like a mother providing to her children. As a bonus our driver Mario took us to Iximché ruins on the way back from the lake. We left around 6:45 and we were back by 7pm in our hotel. We absolutely enjoyed the trip, these places show soul of Guatemala, do not miss them. Highly recommend our driver Mario Xicará - 502 5853 3071, taxi # 796 in Zone 9 of Guatemala City (marioxicará[email protected]). He is reliable and trustworthy.

We were greeted by our tour guide Nathan Retana. Who was very friendly and spoke English very well. He was very knowledgeable about the Guatemala as he was driving us to Tikal. He pointed out land marks on the drive there. Once arriving at the Tikal site we entered and hiked into the park. We had walked up several steps to the first Mayan ruin it was very large and Nathan explained the history and how things are being restored. We told him we didn’t want to go to the top of the pyramid but we were more interested in bird watching so he whipped out his phone and had the app to show us every one we saw or heard. Then he took us down some of the less popular trails so we could listen for birds while we saw some less crowded ruins. Nathan also helped us with some Spanish while we bought some souvenirs at the park. He took us to the restaurant near the park exit which very good. After lunch he returned us to the border and called our other driver that was meeting us at the border so we didn’t have to wait and even waited until he knew we were good to go on the other side before he left us. I highly recommend Nathan Retana as your tour guide
