Things to do in Paris, Ile-de-France: The Best Sights & Landmarks

November 22, 2021 Janette Largent

Lingering over pain au chocolat in a sidewalk café, relaxing after a day of strolling along the Seine and marveling at icons like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe… the perfect Paris experience combines leisure and liveliness with enough time to savor both an exquisite meal and exhibits at the Louvre. Awaken your spirit at Notre Dame, bargain hunt at the Marché aux Puces de Montreuil or for goodies at the Marché Biologique Raspail, then cap it all off with a risqué show at the Moulin Rouge.

Latin Quarter

This famous Left Bank neighborhood, so named because the numerous university students in the area spoke only Latin to their professors until the French Revolution, preserves an authentic Parisian atmosphere of old.

Eglise Saint-Severin

This beautiful Gothic cathedral once served as the main church for the entire Left Bank.

Located in the 5th Arr, stands this gothic church, (we especially love the gargoyles), built in the mid 7th century, standing the test of times,(after a couple of rebuilds), surrounded by lovely tight streets/alleys that haven't been Haussmann’ed. Inside it is a little dark and gloomy, however, this simply adds to the ecclesiastical atmosphere.

Shakespeare and Company Bookstore

Famous bookstore located across from Notre Dame features several floors of books and Paris literary history.

In 1951 a small Parisian bookshop opened it was called Shakespeare and Company a magical place where authors of the time could go and share their ideas with any restrictions. Still today in 2018 you can feel the friendly vibe of the place and spend hours inside just looking at all the books from Sylvia Beach’s collection while enjoying the lovely and vintage vibe of the very special place that is Shakespeare and Company.

I was with my daughter and daughter-in-law while they shopped at the shops along Boulevard Saint Germain when we stumbled upon this small cobblestone passageway. (I actually think one of them was looking for a particular shop that was located here.) The passageway contains some unique shops and restaurants and is very peaceful and relaxing, especially compared to the hectic pace and traffic of the nearby boulevard. While standing in a shop that sold spices, pastries and ice cream, I suddenly realized that I had actually been there before. Memories flooded back of a previous trip to Paris years ago with me standing around in nearly the exact spot as my loving wife bought spices to take back home. Oh, sweet memories!

I always try to book (easily, on-line) a concert at St Julien de Pauvre when I’m in Paris and have thoroughly enjoyed so many good ones. The acoustics are wonderful and the church charming. There is a fairly regular Vietnamese castrato who is fabulous and this month a Japanese piano player with a French tenor doing opera arias which was excellent.

We visited here a few times during our stay in paris, the first was for the chrissie markets which was bustling, after that, the gardens were a lovely place to have a picnic on a sunny day, just a stones throw from the Seine and the Latin Quarter. The Fontaine de Georges Jeanclos (see review) is the centre piece of the gardens.

Rue de la Huchette

Reviewed By Luciafernandez62

This is a short and narrow pedestrian street located in the Latin Quarter, one block away from the Seine River, on the Rive Gauche (the Left Bank of this spectacular river). It is a very old street, lively and different, with lots of informal and colorful restaurants, many of them Greek. It starts at the impressive Place Saint Michel with its beautiful fountain in which the Archangel Saint Michael triumphs over the devil. I love walking around Paris, and this street is very animated and has a lot of character. When I am at the Rive Gauche, I frequently include Rue de la Huchette in my walks. It is indeed a place for tourists, but that is OK for me!

Created in the mid 80’s this is quite an impressive sculpture (mythical creature, body of horse, head of man) standing at 5 meters high, if you look closely at the breastplate you will see a miniature statue of Liberty.
