Things to do in Paris, Ile-de-France: The Best Monuments & Statues

August 5, 2021 Tonie Szymanski

Lingering over pain au chocolat in a sidewalk café, relaxing after a day of strolling along the Seine and marveling at icons like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe… the perfect Paris experience combines leisure and liveliness with enough time to savor both an exquisite meal and exhibits at the Louvre. Awaken your spirit at Notre Dame, bargain hunt at the Marché aux Puces de Montreuil or for goodies at the Marché Biologique Raspail, then cap it all off with a risqué show at the Moulin Rouge.

Colonne de Juillet

This monument was built in the mid-19th century on the site where the Bastille prison used to stand to serve as an inspiration for oppressed people throughout the world.

Colonne de Juillet is a commemorative column, located in Place de la Bastille. It commemorates the Revolution of 1830 which saw the fall of one King and the rise of a new monarchy. It was completed in 1840. It's quite an imposing structure, and it glorifies the three important days (27-29) of the July, 1830, Revolution. At the top of the column is a golden naked figure, symbolising the spirit of freedom. There is a spiral staircase inside the column. We only had a look from the street and did not go inside. Interestingly, the very spot where the column stands used to be the site of the Bastille prison.
