Things to do in Page, Arizona (AZ): The Best Canyons

December 25, 2021 Layne Dawes

It may be difficult to believe that a mere half century ago, the land beneath Page, Arizona and Lake Powell was a vast and bleak desert landscape. Carved out of the rocky terrain, Page sits atop Manson Mesa and overlooks the 186-mile long lake, the dramatic Glen Canyon Dam and the surrounding canyons, arches and historical Native ruins. A mild climate year-round makes Page the perfect central hub for visiting the Grand Circle sites, as well as the neighboring Navajo Nation, home to Window Rock.

We did the early morning tour with Dixie Ellis’ and it was so beautiful! Our tour guide, Dominic, was excellent and provided all sorts of information ranging from local plants, the shaping of the canyon, historical uses of the canyon, and not-to-be -missed photo ops. We are completely satisfied and highly recommend it!

Located near Lake Powell, this "slot" canyon is considered sacred by the Navajo.

The rock formations are truly stunning. Shapes, sizes, colors and views of Lake Powell make it a worth while stop. A turn off from South 89 just before the dam crossing. A gravel road leads to a parking lot about a mile down. Also passes Hanging Garden Trail where you can go swimming if you choose.

Lees Ferry

Beautiful canyon area showcasing the Colorado River. Kind of an expensive day trip, but they take the America The Beautiful pass. There's hiking. Lonely Dell Ranch. The historic ferry area. There's shelters with picnic tables. Bathrooms. This is a big fishing destination, as well as the place you put in your rafts for the once in a lifetime raft trip down the Colorado River. The campground is primitive, but very popular. We drove through & not many open sites. The man whom Lee's Ferry was named after had a sordid past. Google Mountain Meadow Massacre & see what he was up to before hiding out here.

Waterholes Canyon

Reviewed By EvertonBrian

I found this canyon from a blog and called in on my way into Page. The owners and guides were there and suggested waiting a couple of hours for the temperature to drop, it was about 95f and down below, over the ton. I said I’d come back at 8am next morning and then went 3 miles down the road and took in a Horseshoe Bend, another must do. Went back next day and there were just two of us for the tour, priced at $48 each. I knew this was the going rate rate for a 30 minute tour of Lower Antelope Canyon, so thought its market price. A short van trip to the head of the canyon and off we set. This is simply, a most beautiful hike through the Waterhole Canyon with a guide who cares passionately about preserving what nature has given us, just listen for 5 minutes and you will be under the spell of the place. In total it’s about 2.5 miles in length and takes at least 90 minutes, you are guided the whole way and you can stop to take as many photos as you want, you are not rushed here. Access into lower reaches is via ladders varying from 3 to 13ft, but they are easy to descend. I can not recommend this highly enough, if you want to avoid the crowds of Lower & Upper Antelope, Come here, you will not be disappointed.
