Things to do in Oahu, Hawaii (HI): The Best Other Outdoor Activities

December 19, 2021 Augustus Redeker

The Hawaiian island of Oahu is a surfer’s paradise, with swelling waves that can reach epic heights. No wonder, then, that it’s the site of one of the world’s premier competitions, the Triple Crown of Surfing. If hanging ten isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy the beautiful beaches – particularly famous Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Art connoisseurs will appreciate the annual Hale'iwa Arts Festival, a celebration of local crafts, painting, jewelry, sculpture, dance, and music.

My husband and two children had a wonderful experience with Greg McCartney at Ko Olina last week at a privately booked show with him ("Stars Above Hawai'i"). We have seen this show also last year during a visit to Aulani, through the Pau Hana Room. This is such a unique, educational and entertaining way to spend an evening--stargazing through Greg's very excellent telescope and identifying common constellations (both in the standard way of naming them and the Hawai'ian equivalents, with the relevant folklore). For anyone considering if this is worth the money, it definitely is! Greg is so knowledgeable, and he will tailor his discussion of the sky to your understanding, answer any questions and even help you take photographs of things through the lens of his telescope (we had a full moon, which was quite bright and it deters from looking at very distant objects--but we have excellent photos of the moon surface, with stunning detail of the features!). We were able to see some constellations that we could never view from Canada, like the Southern Cross! Our family had him all to ourselves, which was just so excellent, and our kids (ages 10 and 13) really enjoyed this and learned something! Mahalo nui loa for a special night!

This excursion was OUTSTANDING. I cannot tell you how cool it was. Check in was a little crowded but they got everyone in and settled efficiently. I left from the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center. We were taken out to the ocean and then transported to different boats depending on your selection. You even had the opportunity to ADD an excursion once out on the water. I parasailed. I was alone celebrating my birthday, April 19 and had a blast. ALL of the gentlemen were just that--GENTLEMEN. They made sure I was safe and had a great time. Here is a tip -- take about $30 in small bills so you can tip. I got on three boats. :)
