St Nicholas Church in Budesti Josani

Reviewed By ebirsan - Constanta, Romania

The UNESCO heritage wooden church of Budesti Josani was also under a process of renovation. But the true progress can be seen outside the church fence on the main street of the village. There are new administration buildings, including a huge tourist information center. Seven years ago the down street surroundings environment was more adequate with the old church. Any how this church is more remarkable than the others wooden churches from Maramures because here we have displayed part of the Pintea’s chainmail shirt. Pintea is the most important hero of the historical area of Maramures. That’s why visiting the Budesti Josani wooden church is a must.

The Orthodox Synagogue

The synagogue is still active, the local community is using it. In Oradea are still existing 3 synagogues, this is one of them.

Reviewed By florentinadriang - Arad, Romania

Of the three synagogues I discovered in Oradea, the Orthodox Synagogue seems to me the most beautiful. The synagogue, built in an eclectic style, is part of the typology of synagogues spread at the end of the nineteenth century, with a longitudinal space of hall type structure and a women's gallery developed on three sides. The building is oriented east-west with the main facade, the western one facing the street. The main façade composed of three axes, in addition to the surfaces covered with brick is characterized by the great diversity of architectural elements, such as strong pilasters with five sides, of variable height. This time, I visited it inside and I appreciated that it has a beautiful architecture.

Barsana Monastery

Reviewed By Tiberiu_Baranyi - Timisoara, Romania

Near the village of Barsana you will find this monastery ... a place of serenity and prayer open for visitors ... a place that somehow has a positive vibe to it. Overall an excellent place to visit , free for visiting and with free parking .... go visiting on a weekday , during the weekend there is a crowd gathering - some for the service , some just to see this place. Remember , tread lightly you are on holy grounds - so regardless if you are religious or not it is very interesting to see. For those of you interested in wood carving, architecture and arts in general for sure it is worth seeing. Historical values is almost nonexistent since is a fairly newly established monastery ... however it is definitely a must see when you are in the area. Of Course there are souvenir and religious items shops - since visiting is free of charge this a source of income - but also donations are welcome. If you are in the area, definitely stop here - it is a place of tranquility and serenity ...

The Wooden Churches of Maramures

Reviewed By Tiberiu_Baranyi - Timisoara, Romania

Another great piece of history and architecture .... people from Maramures have created another masterpiece. Once more from the 17th century a church with an interesting history, here was found the "Codex of Ieud" ( some historians considering it one of the first writings in Romanian ... nice legend) - A former greek catholic church that is currently "Orthodox" (don't even ask !) Once again the church is not open - but the phone number that you find is working - I've called and in a few minutes somebody showed up and we could visit the church (inside) lovely - it is very interesting - the technique of the fresos and painting is absolutely great - I'm not religious , however the artistic value of the place is undeniable. (the new church at Barsana Monastery - and that has nothing to do with the old churches of Maramures! its a new one built after 1989 ... beautiful but different and not in the same category - has its paintings influenced by the style of the artists who painted Ieud church... great but a copy of Ieud ...). Entrance is a little over 1 Euro .. but definitely worth it - don't forget to call the phone number , and pay attention to the visiting hours, since it would be a pity to miss on this. Architecture is showing the same features the stone foundation the wooden structure and the 2 stepped steep roofing. So, definitely a must see when you are in Maramures - go and see it.

Sapanta-Peri Monastery

Reviewed By Vladimiramirela - Mississauga, Canada

This monastery is an Eastern Orthodox complex built in the past 20 years and following the rebirth of religious faith in Romania, after the fall of Communism. The monastery complex is dominated by a less traditional church, whose steeple is 78 meters high and which hosts at its lower level the actual prayer hall doubled by a souvenirs store.
