Elk Mountain Riding Company

The experience was fantastic. Robin and her crew were great and were very engaging. The trail was beautiful and changing around every corner. Our 10 year old couldn't have been more excited when Robin let her lead our group. It is clear the horses are well cared for and the barn was very nice. We have no regrets for choosing Elk Mountain Riding Company and we highly recommend them for a great time and will be returning next time we are in the area.

Some of the best horse trails in Western North Carolina! These trails were originally built as recreational carriage trails by the Cone family back in the early 1900’s and have been beautifully preserved by the park service over the years. There are 25 miles of trails, leading past two lakes, an historic apple barn & two mountain tops. One has a lookout tower with 360 degree views of the Boone area, including Grandfather Mountain. A highlight is the manor house, now home to art and craft shows and a small ranger/information station. Restrooms with flush toilets are available in the nearby carriage house. Trails open to hikers & equestrians , but not bikes or motor vehicles. Horse trailer parking available at Trout Lake & near the Bass Lake lot. Non-trailer parking available at Bass Lake & right off the Parkway at the manor house.

We drove 2 hours south from Kitty Hawk to surprise our kids with a horseback ride on the beach! It was worth the 2 hour drive! The kids walked freely on 2 beautiful horses, Gus and Shadow, along the beach. The horses were extremely calm and well-trained. There were 2 very kind and personable guides that walked beside the horses. The horses walked on the beach and in the surf. They walked the whole time, so perfect for young kids. They even let mom ride with son for a portion of the ride. They also were very friendly in taking lots of family pictures we asked them to take. They sanitized the provided helmets before giving them to our kids. They also allowed our kids to feed the horses carrots (which we brought with us) after the ride. The kids LOVED this part! We wore shorts, shirts and water shoes - no need for jeans or tennis shoes. This is definitely a casual beach ride, no shoes is fine! We would highly recommend making a day of your trip down here. We wish we would’ve brought our bathing suits and beach gear, as the beach down here is calm, clear, not crowded and beautiful! There are also tons of amazing shells to collect!

Mornings at the farm is our favorite time. All of the animals in the barnyard are just waking up and you can feel the peace in the air. The horses are always happy to see us and we like to believe that they know it's not just because we are getting ready to feed them. Guests will get a chance to accompany Belle (the horse girl) and see this first hand as we get the day started at the farm.
