Steenmeulen

The Steenmeulen is a tourist attraction in Northern France. The mill is classified "Historical Monument". This mill is unique in the area because it has been built with bricks while the others are in wood. The mill is still making flour thanks to its current miller ! There is also a museum in the ancient farm building wich gathers objects, machines and other surprises of the life of the previous century. The owners offer you a guided tour for a few euros (4€ for the mill or the museum alone and 6.50€ for both, 50% reduction for Children from 6 to 12).

Musee de la Bataille de Fromelles

Reviewed By heppy43 - Kingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom

If you’re in the area, this is a must visit. We caught the underground and the bus out to Fromelles from Lille, takes about an hour in total and cost us€3.70 each. The museum is just down past the church and is part of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is very well kept. There is a lot of information in leaflets and from the very knowledgable staff. The museum itself is excellent, with all information in English, French and a couple of other languages. You also get a voice guide to listen to at the various numbered stations. Take the time and walk the route around the sites, it’s 8.5km or if driving you can safely stop at the sites. It says the walk takes approx 2.5hrs, we took 4hrs as we spent time at the sites. Take food and drinks with you as there are no shops enroute. Bus 235 leaves Lille CHR Oscar Lambret metro station at 11.35 heading to Estaires and get off at Fromelles, walk down past the church and the museum is on your left. The bus back departs at 17.44 and is number 235. It takes around 40mins.

Enter one of the most secret place of military history, and discover a real underground town, where more than 20 000 soldiers of the Commonwealth prepared the most surprising attack of WW1.

A must see! Visited here on a quiet Sunday in September after a visit to Point Du Jour cemetery to see a grave of a relative who fought in Arras in the first world war. We came here after wanting to experience a little of what they went through during that time. We were not disappointed. We had a friendly greeting upon entering, reasonably priced and waited 20 minutes for the next tour, and was then set up with a helmet and audio guide in the desired language. Were were then greeted by our excellent tour guide who flicked between French and English to accommodate the group and took us 20 metres underground listening to the audio guide and tour guide which worked perfectly. It was a great experience, very informative and would definitely recommend.

Musee 39-45

Reviewed By DonR533 - Eastbourne, United Kingdom

We found this museum to be very informative and interesting. The models all looked very individual and it is amazing to find that all the items are original. We especially liked the straw over boots and the helmet with the hanging sort of yashmak. Good information in several languages and it included most aspects of the war and the countries involved. Only disappointing bit - there was no video showing on the day we visited and I don,t think we could visit the outside exhibits. Shop very good.
