Nicaragua (/ˌnɪkəˈrɑːɡwə, -ˈræɡ-, -ɡjuə/ ( listen); Spanish: [nikaˈɾaɣwa]), officially the Republic of Nicaragua (Spanish:  República de Nicaragua (help·info)), is the largest country in the Central American isthmus, bordered by Honduras to the north, the Caribbean to the east, Costa Rica to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Managua is the country's capital and largest city and is also the third-largest city in Central America, behind Tegucigalpa and Guatemala City. The multi-ethnic population of six million includes people of indigenous, European, African, and Asian heritage. The main language is Spanish. Native tribes on the Mosquito Coast speak their own languages and English.

Cathedral-Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The inside of the church is pressive enough, but wait until you see the rooftop! Getting a ticket (100c or $3US) to explore the rooftop area was a bit of an exploration itself as you had to find a small door which lead to a dungeon area where the ticket sellers were located. We were pointed in the wrong direction initially and ended up almost circumnavigating the church before we found the right door! Once we purchased our tickets we had to head to the other side of the church to another small door which was the entrance to the rooftop area. We squeezed our way up a few narrow flights of stairs and eventually reached the bell tower. From there a guide pointed us to the rooftop area and we were instructed on the rules of the area, including taking off our shoes at a certain point in order to preserve the pristine white rooftop. The rooftop area is amazing! It is covered in domes and ornate embellishments. From the rooftop there are spectacular views of the distant volcanoes as well as city views. We snapped away photos to our hearts content and marvelled at the beauty of the limewashed white architecture. We were told that the architect was a big fan of chess and you can see references to all of the chess pieces in the structure of the rooftop.
