November 5, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

With its ideal location on the magnificently rugged Oregon Coast, the entire city of Newport is a natural observatory that offers a number of fun and educational activities for the whole family. Spend the morning exploring tide pools, combing the beach for fossils and spotting marine life in their natural habitats. Then head over to the Oregon Coast Aquarium where you can pet an octopus and walk through a glass tunnel surrounded by sharks. Newport is also home to two lighthouses, one of which is the tallest on the Oregon Coast. Historic Nye Beach, with its colorful cottages and laid-back atmosphere, is the perfect spot for a picnic and a quick rest from all the sightseeing.

Summer Business Update. 7/1/2020 We are excited to announce our retail store and gallery are open for business. We are offering a Covid Safe option for the exciting glass blowing classes we are known to offer. This summer we are working with folks to reach into their inner artist and design their best piece of glass and watch our experts create your design.

We made an appointment for two of our grandchildren to do some glass - and we brought the whole family (12 of us were there altogether) - While the older children were given a hands on class on how the create heavy glass paper weights all of our other children were able to watch through their big glass windows behind a seating area. We could not stay and wait for the glass to cool so they are shipping them to us, and my grandchildren can't wait to get home and see their final creations!!

Oregon Oyster Farms

We made the beautiful drive out to the Oregon Oyster Farms hoping to get some shucked oysters outside on the Bay. Not to be for the restaurant was closed. Did not stop them from having a large selection of oysters as well as clams for steaming. My wife and I picked up a pound of the clams and 3 dozen oysters. Had a great feast, raw, grilled, roasted and steamed back at our campground.

Newport Candy Shoppe

This is one of our favorite stops when we head to Newport (there is also a smaller branch on the Bay front) as their chocolate candy is superb. The selection is huge with one counter for creams, one featuring nuts, and one for sugar-free candy. This last time we made a special trip but we arrived before the opening time of 10 but the "fudge-guy" graciously allowed us to come in and purchase our selection of chocolate candy. They have been super busy so all of our candy (mint patties, chocolate creams, almond toffee, chocolate-dipped Oreos) was fresh and delicious (no, we didn't eat it all in one sitting but close). It's on the expensive side but if you desire good, homemade chocolate candy, this is the place to go. They also carry a large selection of salt-water taffy but I'm unsure if that's made in-house.

Definitely had to stop in for some salt water taffy while by the sea! And especially bc I’d never had any before lol! Out of all the candy stores we stopped in to compare taffy flavors, this store had, by far, the cleanest taffy bins and freshest taffy we found! The staff were very helpful and welcoming. Covid safety measures were followed as much as possible. They had all sorts of stuff, chocolates, truffles, popcorn, any type of candy you might want, and an insane amount of taffy flavors! Even chicken-and-waffles and cayenne pepper!! Their taffy is soft and full of flavor! I tried to take pics of the different taffy bins so I could identify them later but it is still hard to tell which one is which though lol! My only suggestion for improvement would be to maybe give out a “menu” or card or something with pics so we can tell which flavors are which...otherwise it’s all good here!
