At the center of the historic & once grand Newark downtown the first class museum with striking exhibit space offers insights into both the old & resurgent city. Adjacent to the elegant Ballantine mansion, overflowing with silver & handsome furnishings, the eclectic collection contains masterpieces from the 19th century & Hudson River School, Corning & Steuben glass, jewelry & modern crafts as well. Although we ran out of time, on our next visit - with discounts for seniors - we look forward to exploring the 20th century art.

My husband and I found this museum on a New Jersey museum website. The current exhibits sounded very interesting and since we've never been to Newark before, we made the 45 mile drive (one way) to visit. We were not disappointed. The executive director, Steve Tettamanti, personally guided us through the different exhibits. They are very informative and thoughtfully displayed. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to read everything. We were there for almost two hours and could easily have stayed another hour or more to really absorb everything. They have a small gift shop on the main floor with a collection of new and used books and prints. **Important info** You must call in advance to make an appointment for admission due to the need to maintain a low number of visitors in the building during Covid. Don't miss this gem!

The Jewish Museum of New Jersey

The Museum includes space for permanent, rotating and traveling exhibitions; a small library and media center; an office; and a gift shop. Presentations at the Museum will have themes that resonate with Jewish people in New Jersey utilizing photographs, paintings, panel displays, artifacts, text, music and multi-media. Moreover, the JMNJ will serve a larger purpose, developing educational and cultural programs that promote greater understanding between individuals representing different backgrounds and religions. It will reach out to other groups, creating meaningful conversations and activities around topics such as cultural diversity, social justice, prejudice, nonviolence, and shared religious values. Moreover, it will form partnerships and develop age-appropriate activities for public, private and parochial school students. The location of the Museum in a city with many ethnic and religious groups provides a wonderful opportunity to establish itself as the first center for the study of tolerance in New Jersey.

“Jazz Events” This is a small museum, inside a Synagogue, that has good free attractions during the year. I have been to a good amount of them. It is worth the trip when they are open

I was greeted by 3 great hosts and after speaking with them, I decided to pay the small fee and check it out. A very pleasant surprise to view the displays, interact with other displays and become a step in musician in some areas for fans. You make it what you put in. Learn to drum, sing along or just view what is on display. I was not disappointed. May take other family members there when I go back. Note: Check the website for hours since they are not open late and are closed during other times. Nice viewing a bit of history.
