Things to do in New York City, New York (NY): The Best Comedy Clubs

January 31, 2022 Etsuko Causey

Conquering New York in one visit is impossible. Instead, hit the must-sees – the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art – and then explore off the beaten path with visits to The Cloisters or one of the city’s libraries. Indulge in the bohemian shops of the West Village or the fine dining of the Upper West Side. The bustling marketplace inside of Grand Central Station gives you a literal taste of the best the city has to offer.

You never know what you will get at UCB! Lots of variety. Character comedy always a hit. Improv can be occasionally hit or miss on the laughs, but at $9 per ticket in a great new midtown theater, (formerly the Pearl Theater) with such spirited, generous performers, no one should EVER EVER complain here. There’s also wine and beer for sale in the lobby... I personally love “Characters Welcome”, the next to last Thursday of each month, hosted by two comics with such endearing chemistry, Sarah Parsons and Eric Feurer. They each perform a character while introducing a group of other characters, I belly laughed all the way through, and really enjoyed the two MCs’ banter with us, the audience. I have also seen evenings of two mini-plays, each showcasing one performer. And those with bigger casts. I love the variety. I also love the proximity of Treadwell Park right down the street, which has free popcorn, games, and an $8 rare cheeseburger to die for that comes with a free beer during happy hour. No worries about timing since UCB is a short walk away. I’m happy to occasionally pay big bucks for Broadway but this is frankly a steal for a great fun night with friends!

The Producer's Club

Reviewed By A1638LCsamk - New York City, United States

You can see a Broadway show for $150 or more per person -- or you can visit this off, off Broadway venue (right in the heart of the theatre district!) and get an evening full of entertainment for only a few bucks! The Producer’s Club is one of the best kept secrets in New York City – only it’s not a secret to veteran theatre folk, those developing new acts and plays, or those who use one of it’s small, comfortable theatres as a showcase spot. An iconic spot in midtown Manhattan, at 358 West 44th Street, New York, NY 10036, it’s where you can see repertory troupes, such as IRTE: the Improvisational Repertory Theatre Ensemble and their season of hilarious, improvised shows, each themed and cast with seriously funny folk who can bring you a load of entertainment and laughs for only around $18-20. The Club has several different small theatres and most importantly, a well-stocked bar! Patrons are also permitted to bring their drinks from the bar into the individual theatres. The only drawback of The Producer’s Club is that it is not wheelchair accessible. But enter on 44th Street, right off Ninth Avenue, where you are also in the thick of theatre district restaurants for dinner or snacks before or after a show. The first IRTE show of the 2020 season is “Diner on the Edge,” a surreal experience for the patrons and staff of a rural restaurant on the brink of a catastrophe the audience determines. Conceived and Directed by William Berg; Developed by and Starring IRTE with … Robert Baumgardner, Glorianne Cody, Nannette Deasy, Curt Dixon, Natalie Hunter, Sam Katz, Esther Lu, Jamie Maloney, and Lars Montanaro. Featuring music performed by Tym Moss. WHEN: Fridays & Saturdays, March 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 & 28. TIME: 8:00 p.m. Season Pass and Group Discounts Available. Visit IRTE’s website or our Facebook page. Tickets also available through TDF and other online sources.
