In recent years he has begun exploring different media and a more challenging direction in his smaller-scale fine artwork. Using the seductive properties of richly saturated color, a wide array of natural and artificial light sources, luscious and diverse texture, found materials and quirky, sometimes unsettling imagery, his work offers viewers a complex intellectual experience.

Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear.
