Things to do in Mumbai, Maharashtra: The Best Food Tours

September 22, 2021 Dorsey Hagwood

Though Mumbai can feel chaotic and crowded, there are peaceful moments to be found here. Nibble a paper cone of bhelpuri while you stroll the sands of Chowpatty Beach. Then, take a short walk to Mani Bhavan, where Mahatma Gandhi once lived, strategized, and was ultimately arrested. The markets are spirited places to bargain for spices or souvenirs. Take a guided tour of Dharavi – made famous by "Slumdog Millionaire" – for an eye-opening glimpse into what Mumbai life is like for nearly a million people.

During lockdown times it was a pleasure to be part of a virtual tour of horniman circle and around. Though i have walked that area so many times i enjoyed listening to the stories and people behind all the buildings there. The host Farokh Jijina was very crisp and clear in his presentation. Brought back memories of the times i worked in that area but also sometines made me wish i was born a 150 years earlier to enjoy these buildings in their heydays.

NFPs walking tours are a great way to explore Mumbai as an insider. I did the Horniman Circle tour(Bombay Zero) on a Sunday Morning, at first I was a little hesitant as the tour started at 8:30 am but after completing the tour I realised it was so worth it! Totally felt like I travelled back-in time and experienced “Bombay”- in all its past glory. A special mention should go to Aditya who provided live commentary on the tour, really enjoyed his enthusiasm!

Mohammad Ali road is one of the most important stops on your culinary sojourn in Mumbai. While the stories of vegetarian street food and the influence of the mill culture adorn the backyard of Girgaon, Mohammad Ali Road and Bohri Mohulla have created an insignia of non-vegetarian street food. Skewered Kebabs, spicy curries and colorful sweets dot these areas aplenty.

We can definitely recommend Reality Tours & Travels Bombay and Delhi. Before the Corona crisis in 2019, we book with Reality Tours our travel with taxis, trains, flights and hotels. Everything was ready. And we prepaid a significant prepayment. But in March 2020 came the flight ban and the impossibility to travel to India. A hectic e-mail exchange followed, which unfortunately sometimes took longer and longer. At last, the founder Krishna himself took the problem into his own hands and the advance payment was immediately transferred back to us. Of course, we will book our trips again with Reality & Tours as soon as the situation allows.
