The Abramtsevo Museum is near the town of Sergiev Posad (roughly 60 kilometers northeast of Moscow). The estate is along the River Vorya and was built in the mid 18th century. The writer Sergey Aksakov purchased Abramtsevo in 1843 and is said to have created his best works there, including notes on angling, hunting and autobiographical stories. Writers Nikolay Gogol and Ivan Turgenev are also said to have visited Abramtsevo.

Abramtsevo Estate Museum is at the small village area of Abramtsevo about 60 km northeast of Moscow. It can be reached from Moscows Yaroslavl station. Note there is a new train service and times. It is on the rail line from Moscow to Sergev Posad. For us it was a great adventurous day away from Moscow after a week of grand palaces and busy city activity. The Estate is famous because of its role in the Arts and Craft Movement in Russia (similar to William Morris in the UK) I read it is open from Wednesday to Sunday, but we went on Friday and found the buildings closed though the park was fully open to wander around. However the exterior of the architecture is so interesting and beautiful that we still had a wonderful time there. There is also a lovely shop in the grounds which sells very tasteful souvenirs of the estate an beautiful crafts and art. The houses/buildings represent different styles and purposes, from elegant Mansions to beautifully wooden carved traditional cottages. These were places where famous artists came, worked and rested. I loved the beautiful little ceramic church and the little Baba Yaga (witches) hut (from the cihldren's fairytale. This place has such arts and cultural history and there is plenty on the Internet to give you background information before you go. I would advise researching so you can appreciate Abramtsevo to the full. The park is beautiful and there is a lovely circular walk through open forest, along the lake and meadows.

Went to the monastery at Sergiyev Posad today, what a wonderfully peaceful place with so much history. The churches with their golden and blue starred cupolas are a wonderful site but the beauty is on the inside with the intricate artwork of the Icons to the fabulously detailed walls and ceilings. It is a working monastery with constant services in progress so it goes without saying that respect is the key. I had my Russian guide and also a English speaking guide for my time in the monastery, there is so much information to take in so if you only speak English this is a must. I was there in the winter when it is quiet, apparently in the summer it is very busy. If you choose to go you will not be disappointed. The level of devotion by the citizens who use this as a functional place for prayer is truly moving.
