Things to do in Michigan, United States: The Best Food & Drink

February 8, 2022 Tambra Mccollister

Think you need an ocean for a beach? Think again. There are miles and miles of sandy lakefront beaches in Michigan (thanks to the four Great Lakes that border it). The west coast of Michigan has especially nice beaches—try a rental in Muskegon, Grand Haven or Saugatuck. You won’t need a car when visiting Mackinac Island. In fact, they’re not allowed—this lovely Victorian resort town is pedestrian-only.

Motor City Gas

Voted a “Top 25 Distillery in the U.S.” by Travel and Leisure Magazine and a “Top 10 Whiskey Bar in the U.S.” by Yelp.com, Motor City Gas is a small batch whiskey distillery manufacturing a constant revolving variety of hand crafted whiskies from grain to bottle. A fusion of traditional and new age micro-distilled whiskies from bourbons to single malts to exotic grain whiskies and even a bit of moonshine. Our commitment to doing things Against The Grain pays homage to the original moonshiners who paved the way for the American spirit we've come to call - Whiskey.

A small batch whiskey distillery with a bar. You can sample the whiskey (and rye, and bourbon), try their mixed drinks and purchase bottles. The place is small, the bar is right next to the distillery on 4th street, just a few blocks from downtown Royal Oak. The employees are friendly and helpful. At my last visit I purchased a sample pack of 6 different whiskeys as a gift for my husband. I recommend a visit and a cocktail. Cheers!

Abundance of fresh, local fruits and vegetables, local honey, pastries and breads, including several gluten and dairy/vegan free options (the blueberry gluten free donuts were amazing!). Several vendors had plants to sell. They also had food vendors / trucks. Prices comparable to what we expected. Live music and beautiful weather added to the enjoyment. Ample free parking nearby.

Bee Well Mead & Cider

Our family has lived in the area between Clam Lake, Lake Bellaire, and Torch Lake for six generations. We have a special love of the area, and we want to bring you the flavor of this spectacular spot. Our honey comes from bees that travel to local orchards and farms, creating a flavor that truly represents Northern Michigan. We source our fruit as close to the meadery as possible by working with those same local farmers whose crops were pollinated by the bees. We have a long family history of bottling delicious drinks. Our great-great-grandpa Bailey bottled water from a natural spring on the banks of Clam Lake. This fantastic water was sold throughout the community. His building still stands across from our childhood home, and serves as a daily reminder to do grandpa proud.

Our wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in the Lake Michigan Shore Appellation - one of the most fertile growing regions in the nation - which not only sets us apart from other wineries in the state, but has been instrumental in making us Michigan's most-awarded winery. Our wide selection of award-winning wines ranges from internationally recognized dry wines to award-winning sweet wines, and everything in between. We are also proud to offer craft distilled spirits, and ciders.

We took a tour of the distillery and then stayed for a tasting afterwards. The tour guide was absolutely lovely and nice, she did a great job breaking down the process while also spreading the message of the hands on nature of the distillery (she’s an accountant, runs the tasting room, and helps bottle on occasion). Topping off the tour was the tasting and, while I can’t speak for the Voka or Gin as I’ve never been a huge fan of either, their selections of whiskey were delightful. I bought a bottle of their Ole George on my way out and will definitely be back for more.
