Mina El Eden

This closed mine, extremely prosperous in colonial times, offers tours of the old mining facilities and an underground nightclub.

Put on your yellow hardhat, board the train and disappear into the history that made Zacatetas what it is today.Mina El Eden produced more silver than almost any other mine in Mexico. Inside the mine you'll wonder how people could work under such conditions from 1586 until the 1960s. Of course, many of them were enslaved by the Spanards for hundreds of years. Even with a concrete trail and lots of lighting, one feels the claustrophia of mining. You'll get a small understanding of what was it like for a slave miner to hang from a small seat on a crack in the earth hammering out a chunk of silver-bearing rock. You'll also understand why so many children died while collecting and carrying water throughout the mine. The start of the tour takes you through a wonderful mineral museum that will amaze you with the beauty and creativity of this old rock on which we live.

The Acosta Mine starts working in 1727 and keeps its productivity until 1985. Nowadays it has became in an important Museum where you can know about its History and relevant acpects about mining. The Site guards historic architectural remains, testimony of its Historical stages: Colony, english immigration and investment in the region, starting with the Age of Steam and the advent of electricity with the Northamerican investors. You will also visit the inside of a tunnel where you'll be able to see a Silver vein after a historical tour about mining work.

Opal Mines

This tour involves a ride out to the boonies then getting in back of a pick up to go up to the mines, the tour guides help kids (and adults if your nice lol) bust rocks and find opals, if you need to relieve some stress and break some things and maybe find a treasure this is fun. I wouldn’t take a kid under 8 tho because it’s quite a bumpy ride up the mountain.

We recommend the tour and if your Spanish is not the best then ask for Alphonso aka "Pancho". He had the english required to explain the history, geology and mineralogy more than adequately. He also made the tour fun and there were some surprise guests!
