January 11, 2022 Trinity Boughner

The Hawaiian island of Maui is a destination for true nature lovers. The ethereal bamboo forest and churning waterfalls in Haleakala National Park can be explored via the Waimoku Falls Trail. Stretch out on warm, golden sands or hit the surf for an unforgettable windsurfing or snorkeling session. Driving the scenic road to Hana along the island’s northeastern shore will be among the most spectacular journeys of your life. Time stands still at the Hawaiian village of Keanae, definitely worth a visit.

Thompson Ranch Riding Stables

We visited Thompson Ranch on our last day in Maui and went on their morning ride. 2 other people were supposed to ride with us but they were concerned about the steep rocky terrain, so it ended up being a private ride. The horses are so well cared for and loved, and the family was really nice and careful about who could ride their horses (not over 200 pounds, for instance.) We has a great 3 hour ride with Andrea, from the barn at 4000 ft up to their cabin at 6000 feet. Gorgeous views when we weren’t in the clouds, but being in the clouds on horseback was amazing too. Loved the entire experience! We would highly recommend them to anyone wanting a small group horseback ride in the mountains of Maui!

Loved the ride. Our horses were Hoku and Sundance. Nice pace, not too fast or slow. The guide, Yod, provided interesting details along the way. Saw some cattle and deer on the ride. Beautiful views of the mountains and ocean. We hope Maui gets some rain, as some of the fields are in desperate need of it.

Triple L Ranch Private Custom Horseback Rides

The Triple L Ranch Maui is located on the pristine, sacred and undeveloped country above the Kanaio coastline on the southwest side of Maui's volcanic crater, Haleakala. We offer private ranch tours by horseback, with routes starting on the dormant volcano's slopes and winding down through grazing cattle, lush vegetation and lava flows that feature incredible views of the ocean, Kahoʻolawe and the Big Island. Our guests are treated with local aloha, so in addition to having an incredible ride, you'll come away feeling like you're part of the family while learning to ride paniolo-style. 1.5hr , 2hr and half day tours with lunch! Always private tours! Just you and our cowboy!

The day we went was rainy, but the service and amazing staff 100% made up for that. There is a beautiful little home space where you can sit and enjoy snacks before your tour. Paige is an amazing artist, and her pictures are on display around the room. You are given some background of the ranch by the lovely staff while your guide sets up your horses. Then you saddle up, (your horse is not given to you randomly, the guide will give you one based off your size and comfort level) and begin the tour. Unlike other tours I have been on before, this one is much more wild, instead of being on a road like path, you go on more wild trails. The owners of the ranch also have free-range cattle so you get to see the cows up close on your tour. You stop halfway through and the tour guide takes a picture (not necessary, of course) and then you complete your tour. As well as an amazing ranch they also own a burger stand, (remember the cattle?) which I heard was amazing. They are open Tuesday through Sunday. This experience was one of my best in Maui; I 100% recommend!

Pat and Helaine cater to the small group trail ride. The horses are well cared for, and the ride is a step up from the "normal" head to tail trail ride. You will experience the beach, as well as upcountry for magnificent views. We would not hesitate to book another ride with them!

I highly recommend Lahina Stables to anyone who wants to ride a horse, experienced or not. I went in having never sat on a horse, and being a little scared of them, and I still ended up having a great time. The staff teaches you the essentials about trail riding, and then you set off on a beautiful ride through the hills and into the maui valley. Even though maui was in a bit of a heat wave, the clouds from the Mountain range and the ocean breeze kept us (mostly) cool. The horses were great as well, easy to control, and they knew the trail so it was easy for even a beginner. Overall, the great staff, easy to ride horses, and pretty scenery made this trail ride very fun, and I would recommend it to anyone.
