RONGAI ROUTE 7 DAY begins at the remote, northern side of Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. We hike through a true wilderness area towards the jagged Mawenzi Peak, then cross a barren desert saddle, before climbing up Kibo’s eastern crater wall. The Rongai route is a more gradual ascent, and is therefore preferred by those with little or no backpacking experience, but is equally enjoyable for even the most hardened trekkers. As mentioned above, an additional acclimatization day on Day 5 is added. During this day, we will do additional acclimatization hikes around and up to the saddle towards Camel’s Back.

Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations. The minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is quite low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Klimanjaro using the Marangu route. However, despite its immense popularity, we avoid leading climbs on the Marangu route. The route has the least scenic variety of all the routes because the ascent and descent are done on the same path and it is the most crowded route for that reason. Marangu is favored only during the rainy season, where the hut accommodations are preferred.

My trip to Tanzania started OK with a large group of us (from England) climbing Kilimanjaro. Unfortunately, after four days of being poorly, I had to descend and head back to Moshi while the other 12 carried on. Dennis and two other porters were with me on the mammoth 8 hour trek down which was over some challenging terrain. I have to hand it to these guys, they looked after me all the way, picking me up when I was down both mentally and physically! So, I had three days before the rest of the group returned - they all summited by the way - and before my safari. In that time Dennis organised a couple of days out for me, Chemka Hot Springs, Coffee Plantation and Materuni Waterfalls both of which he was with me and I briefly met his wife and I have since adopted his two daughters from afar! Dennis is a cheeky chappie with a fun sense of humour, is fun , friendly, very knowledgeable and has an excellent command of English and I thoroughly recommend him as a guide to anybody visiting Tanzania. We have stayed in touch and I am happy to call him a friend.

The Rongai Trailhead is Kilimanjaro's only route beginning from the north side and crossing the mountain. It is used by few trekkers. It joins with the Marangu Route on the final ascent to the summit on the fourth day, but otherwise few others are seen along the way. This route affords the opportunity to witness up-close the Mawenzi volcano, the second highest peak of Kilimanjaro, and the magnificent saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peak. Due to the rugged terrain and the very limited acclimatization time, fitness plays a huge role in the enjoyment and success of this trek. Each day you see many changes of vegetation and scenery, due to the rising terrain and decrease in precipitation. The accommodation is in mountain tents and dining is in our mess tents. Toilet tents with convenient and sanitary portable flush toilets are set up at all camps.

Inclusions: All Fees and Taxes, Lunch, Dinner, Lunch, Breakfast, Lunch, Lunch, Lunch, Breakfast, Dinner, Breakfast, Breakfast, Breakfast, Dinner, Dinner, Dinner, Breakfast and lunch, Camping gears such as Tent, mattress, chairs and table, Airport pick up and drop off, Mountain crew (Guides, Chef and porters)

We had a great experience with Wild Root. Mathew, the owner, was very responsive, and tailored the trip to our needs and requests, which wasn't easy given we were travelling with a four year old. Mbine (sp?), our guide, was very knowledgable about the wildlife and ecosystems, and great to be around! He also tailored our days to our requests and time constraints. I would use Wild Root again.

After friends had told us about their Kili trek we got hooked on the idea of our own trip to Tanzania to climb that famous mountain. The guide of the trek we had been told about also had taken the bold step to create his own company - Kili Land Adventures. So we decided to seize the opportunity and contacted Kili Land Adventures about our tour. Their planning efforts started immediately and we were presented with a tour plan (Lemosho route) that we felt was very sensible and tailored to our abilities. A packing list was provided and many more details via email. The trip itself was very much at stake during the Covid-19 times, but in the end we could travel to Tanzania using Qatar Airways. Our hike onto Mount Kili was an unforgettable experience. Our crew of guides, porters and one cook were the kindest and most supportive people imaginable. They cared for us very, very well; they judged our progress on the mountain and proposed favorable modifications to the tour plan to optimize our use of time and to ensure good progress on our way to the summit. In the end we had some "difficulties" only on the summit day (which was to be expected), but all the other days went very smoothly thanks to the crew's diligent planning of our acclimatization. And finally, we made it to the summit, all four of us, just as planned! It was difficult (I won't lie about that!), but in the end we felt safe and confident, throughout the summit day. The guides were very generous in answering all of our (many!) questions and patiently waited for us to take hundreds of photos. I have the highest respect for the people of our crew, be it the guides or the porters, these guys are some of the toughest persons on this planet. Let me add that after our Kili trip we also went on to some days of safari (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti). Our safari driver-guide was suggested and hired for us also by Kili Land Adventures (although the guide does not work directly for them). This guide was extremely motivated, kind, and knowledgable, and therefore the whole safari was absolutely on par with our unforgettable Kili trip. So if you consider traveling to Tanzania, do yourself a favor and contact Kili Land Adventures to work out a plan for you. You will be a happy customer ...

Marangu Route, the "Coca-Cola" route, is the oldest, most well-established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route that offers sleeping huts in dormitory-style accommodations in lieu of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut. Many favor Marangu because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. I used Dodo Group Tanzania for a hike on Kilimanjaro then a family Safari. They were simply awesome from the first contact through the completion of the trip. The initial booking through Collins was clear, prompt, and very helpful. The mountain crew was just awesome, resulting in a successful climb. My daughter had to abandon the attempt due to bronchitis, and they were equally awesome in escorting her down and caring for her. Then the game watching safari was again very well done, the guide seemed to have an almost mystical understanding of what the animals were about to do and positioning us for the best view. I cannot imagine a better operator.
