We had a half day tour together with Franck in the vineyards of Nantes. It was informative, interesting and all together a great experience even though the weather wasn't showing its best sides. Franck is a great tourguide and has great knowledge about both the area and about wine. I would definitely recommend doing this if you plan to visit the area!

The vineyard of Domaine FL (Fournier-Longchamps) extends over nearly 34 hectares, on both sides of the Loire, on a terroir that has been home to vines since the 12th century. Soil on which the chenin blanc, historical grape variety in Anjou, is king! Its complexity and its great aptitude for ageing have always given it a special status.

This attraction was recommended to us by a family friend, we are very, very pleased he did so. It’s a bit off the tourist path, so was incredibly cheap at €7 each, and worth every cent. My SatNav took me from Saumur via several D roads, but, it was well worth the effort. It’s amazing to realise that these cave dwellings were in use until the 1960’s when the last family moved out, and several families used to live in the complex of caves and tunnels for many centuries prior to that. The path through the underground village is well signposted and each room has information panels in French and English. I particularly recommend the shadows and silhouettes video that is shown in the “village hall” and the church cave, under the main town church, with a rather odd electronic horse piece of art. A rather limited selection of drinks and snacks is available from the entrance kiosk, but there’s a very nice tea room and restaurant between the village and the parking area, so we went there after our tour. Highly recommended if you are anywhere near Saumur or travelling through the Loire
