The Groundlings Theatre

Melrose Avenue's Groundlings have been practicing their high-octane brand of anything-goes improvisation for nearly three decades. Audiences know the group for their wacky sketch comedy and lightning audience participation rounds, but for aspiring comedians and writers it's the Groundlings School that's the real draw. With courses in beginning and advanced improv, sketch and monologue comedy, the school has trained several generations of young wits. Its alumni includes a laundry list of "SNL"-ers (Phil Hartman, Julia Sweeney, Will Ferrell, Laraine Newman), Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson and Emmy-winning "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow. The theatre was also the home of Paul Reubens' early, raunchier version of "Pee-Wee's Playhouse." With pristine standards and a pool of hundreds of talented newcomers to draw from, the troupe offers some of the quickest, cleverest improv in town, cozily presented in their own 100-seat theater.

ComedySportz is the longest running show in Los Angeles now in it's 20th year. Not comedy about sports; it’s comedy PLAYED as a sport! Two teams of our improvisers compete for laughs and points in a comedy competition. There are fouls to keep the show from being in poor taste; there’s even one to make a player apologize for telling lame jokes! The show is always completely interactive, and suitable for all audiences.

UCB Theater Sunset

We went to Upright Citizens Brigade having booked a show called "Regifted" after Christmas and after reading the description. We took our 13 year daughter, who is no stranger to improv theater. We expected foul language, However, the sexual content of the show was not listed in the description as with other shows. That was a bit of a shocker. We did enjoy the show very much and found the improv abilities of the actors to be excellent. We may be interested in booking Master Improv Classes for a group of teens in the future through this theatre. Very entertaining, high quality fun for an inexpensive night out. There is an amazing book/records store next door to peruse before the show. Eat at "Birds" after your show! They are open late and have great reviews.

Filming site of the show "Evening at the Improv" showcasing a variety of comedy talent.

For those who haven't seen Hollywood Babble On at the Improv - here's what we found works best. BUYING TICKETS - Buy tickets with a dinner reservation. This means you get to eat before the show and you don't have to pack in with everyone else like a cattle call to try and get a seat as close to the stage as possible (first come first serve). BUT if you have a reservation for dinner they reserve a seat inside for you. So you can lounge at your table until just before the show and you still have a seat. It's still best to show up as early as you can so you get a closer table. (The appeared to assign tables for the show as you arrived for dinner.) PARKING - Parking was so much easier than I expected. There is a valet option right in front of the building, but there is also a lot for $10 just beyond The Improv and around the corner to the right. They will wave you in. EASY! OVERVIEW - This was a fantastic night! The show, Hollywood Babble On, was incredibly funny! Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman never fail to make me laugh. The Improv itself is also fantastic. The space is intimate but I can't believe there is a bad seat in the house. The food was also very tasty. We split a pizza and slice of cheesecake that was very creamy and rich. I wish I would have had more room to try another dessert because they all looked good. Our friends enjoyed their pizza and brussel sprouts.
