National Wildlife Refuge
Inexpensive parking. Beach parking. Park filled qlwith deer, Turkey, chipmunks, and a variety of birds. Known for the birds to fly into your hands and eat. Be sure to bring birdseed. Chipmunks crawled onto my hand as no ate as well. Small park with walking trails.

Took my 3 year old daughter for a drive thru visit yesterday and we all loved it! It was absolutely wonderful that they offered this during a time when we have to socially distance ourselves (COVID-19 time for anyone reading this later on). The staff was beyond amazing and friendly. They did not rush us at all during this visit and they each made my daughter smile and enjoy herself. We can not wait to go back!

This Nature Conservancy property spans 2,100 acres, and accounts for one-third of the land on Shelter Island.
This is a great place for a hike, especially with the family. I went with my 2 daughters in their 20s and we chose the red trail (1.4 miles). The trail was easy (I have arthritis of the knees, so it was just fine) and it was clearly marked with benches along the way. Kids will really like the fact that you get to read one page of a children's picture book every few yards, so that once you finish the hike you finish the story. There is also a gazebo along the way with water views. A lovely experience ... highly recommend it!

Whether it's a hike to the beach, a ride on the zip line in the playground or learning about tadpoles at the pond, spending a day at the preserve is worth it. We've enjoyed our membership year after year. It never disappoints.

I went there on April 29, 2018. Wonderful wild flowers; violets, marsh marigolds, red trillium (at least 10 in bloom along the trails) and trout lily starting to bloom (could be in the hundreds). The skunk cabbage was leafed out soon to be replaced by the abundant ferns. If you go there in the summer it has a real tropical feel. its great to be able to walk by a brook on long island, I really dont know any place open to the public where you can do that here. some of the trails can be mucky. Great photography, good bird watching, great flora, huge carp(?) in the pond. what more do you want?

What a wonderful place to get away & enjoy a quiet woodsy peaceful area. Great hiking trails, easy to get in your 10,000 steps ! Easy to commune with nature & a lot to discover. A gem in the middle of Stony Brook.

The gardens here are beautiful but the park is large enough that you get away from planned gardens and into nature. This is right on a bay and contains its own ponds with turtles. The main house is beautiful with a really nice little restaraut with high quality food.
