Things to do in La Paz, La Paz Department: The Best Outdoor Activities

August 3, 2021 Weston Hennigan

Sitting in a valley in the Andes Mountains, La Paz is the city that touches the clouds. The de facto capital of Bolivia, and sitting between 3300 and 4100 meters above sea level, La Paz is the highest capital city in the world. Rich with 19th century churches, museums of artifacts from the pre-Conquest era, precarious overlooks, and colorful markets, La Paz is truly unique. The Witches’ Market, in the center of the city, sells charms and potions for Aymara rituals, as well as souvenirs.

Gravity Bolivia

Since 1998 we have been rip-roaring, hoot-hollerin, and loving the amazing trails only the Andes can provide. We have taken more than 90,000 riders on once-in-a-lifetime, 2-wheeled pleasure bombs, (lives well lived, that is) in the incredible Andes. We’re talking about the ancient birthplace of the Incas, 3000m+ (11,000 ft+) descents, glacier, jungle (in that order), outta this world and off the beaten path cultural experiences, scenery, and bragging rights. Bring a pen cuz we’ve got some bucket-list-lines-to-cross-out kind of adventures. And we have got just the adventure for you! We were the first company to ride Death Road in 1998 and all those years of experience ensure you'll have an amazing day with us! We are the only company in Bolivia which operates under international safety standards, our bikes are the best available, and our guides are internationally certified. For Death Road you go with the safest company possible, plus we finish at Senda Verde Animal Refuge!

Valle de las Animas

Reviewed By santaaklaus - Zurich, Switzerland

The trip was great, but also truned out to be very dangerous. We didn’t go via. the slingshot route which was a mistake, since all hell broke loose when it started to rain. Landslides occured, earth cracked open and trees were washed away. We were soaking wet for several hours and the route we took, was impossible to exit in the end because the road was destoryed by a river (see picture) so we had to go all the way back.. Be careful of street dogs when you enter and leave the trial. They were biting in our jackets which we used for shields, so get the taxi to set you off as close as possible to the trail. Or carry a stick to push the dogs away. Otherwise great nature and I didn’t mind the adventure where the situation got dire for us. Bring plenty of food, water and coca leaves. Altitude is high. Only got a couple of pictures from when it started to rain like hell, but it was way worse than it looks. Have fun on the trip and don’t follow the road as seen on the picture. You can do it, but prepare to go all the way back that you came from. Cheers
