Things to do in La Fortuna de San Carlos, Province of Alajuela: The Best Multi-day Tours

April 9, 2022 Brain Ambrose

La Fortuna de San Carlos is at the center of an array of geological wonders.  The nearby Arenal is Costa Rica's most active volcano, routinely bursting with lava and ash, and the Catarata de La Fortuna is a waterfall pouring from a seventy-meter cliff.  The Tabacon Hot Springs are a relaxing intermission in the midst of the various spectacles, and the Leaves and Lizards Arenal Volcano Cabin Retreat is a blissful end to any day's excursion.

He makes you feel comfortable right when you meet and will go out of his way to provide the best experience he possibly can. Overall the tour was an amazing experience we will never forget. Thanks Angelo, Costa Rican Nature Guide, and Arenal Expeditions!

I was in Costa Rica in January, now I have traveled to Colombia. I have waited several months but I cannot shake how HORRIBLE this tour was. We were supposed to have a tour bus but was instead packed into a sedan. At some point the tour guide was alluding to us going to a nicer restaurant and having us pay for his lunch because the office "did not send the money over" for the included meal. I have been on many tours before and many after but this one was easily the worst. Our tour guide was out taking pictures of his own on every site instead of actually guiding us. What took the cake was when we thought we were going to see a coffee plantation but instead he pulls over on the side of the road to a ditch to show us mounds of dirt that supposedly were growing coffee and he said he couldn't take us to an actual plantation because "The Nicaraguans are harder working and the Costa Rican youth are always on their phones now so it won't be worth it". We paid 100+ dollars EACH for a glorified taxi ride across the country. 0/10 don't recommend

This is the most pure inland hike available in Costa Rica. Feel the excitement of going through rivers, hiking on beautiful mountain trails, going into the dense jungle for hours, having the most scenic volcano and lake views and experiencing the rural lifestyle in a totally secluded valley. Once we arrive at the mountain cabin you get thrown back in time cooking on a wood fire stove, enjoying the pure food and the company at the candle lit table. Having spend the night we get going to finish the leg of the hike that takes us to Monteverde. Tired but undoubtedly satisfied you can congratulate yourselve, your fellow hikers and your tour guide for having been part of this unforgettabe adventure.

The beginning part of the day started off a bit slow. There seemed to be a lot of extra time sitting around. The second half of the day was great. Lot of hiking around the volcano. It was beautiful and we lucked out and had great weather. Got to see some great animals including a sloth and some monkeys. The end of the day at the hotsprings was the BEST. It was so relaxing. We had some beverages and some nice clay face mask treatment. Even though the first part of the day was slow, I would still recommend this tour. It was well worth the money and we had a great time! The tour guide was absolutely AWESOME.

The six hour tour only took two. The dept of health had closed down the city due to a COVID outbreak. Everything was closed. Can’t really blame the operator. Probably also went faster because there were just the two of us.

Last December I went from La Fortuna to Granada with Agua Trails, it was supposed to be a shared transportation, but finally I was the only passenger. Everything went perfectly fine. Polle is super nice, precise, on time, funny. We had nice chats during the trip, he explained me many things about Costa Rica and we stopped to take some pictures. At the border his colleague in Nicaragua came to pick me up and everything went smooth. It was a pleasure meeting Polle and I definitely recommend Agua Trails!
