Things to do in Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan: The Best Art Museums

September 21, 2021 Jasper Kershner

The cultural hub of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur is visually defined by the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, which, at 88 stories high, are the tallest twin buildings in the world and a vision of modern architecture. On the flip side, the Sri Mahamariamman is the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia, its façade a colorful totem pole of iconography. Shopping at the Central Market is a joyful experience that involves haggling, handicrafts, and happiness.

Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

Large open-plan museum on four levels with an impressive collection of Islamic artifacts. The wood carvings are a consistent favorite.

This museum should be a required visit by tourists visiting KL. It deals with a great deal of the culture, crafts and history of the Muslim world, and as such bestows a great deal of honor to that world. A great deal of thought and effort went into the curating of the museum. The sheer amount of material on display requires a long visit or several shorter ones.

Art House Gallery Museum of Ethnic Arts

We are the one and only art gallery cum museum here in West Malaysia displaying native art from East Malaysia . # listed on Lonely Planet Leonard Yiu has been an antique and art dealer /collector since 1988. In 2006, he decided to open another outlet at The Annexe building situated behind Central Market, which is known as the Arts and Craft Centre of Kuala Lumpur. ART HOUSE GALLERY MUSEUM OF ETHNIC ARTS is devoted entirely to ethnic arts of this region. It's called a Gallery due to it's tasteful art sense and decor ; It's also called a Museum because part of the exhibits, notably antiques/artefacts from Borneo are NOT FOR SALE.

Galeri Petronas

Reviewed By geraldinek883

The Galeri Petronas is up on the third floor of the Suriya Mall. I found I ran out of signage before I found it - sort of round a corner. Displays change. The current one, to April 12, is of abstract expressionism and portraits. Notes on the artwork are clear and helpful if you know nothing about the Malaysian art scene ( like me!) The gallery is spacious and well lit, and was fairly quiet. Worth seeking out.
