Things to do in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina (NC): The Best Museums

August 18, 2021 Tonie Szymanski

With water, water everywhere, visitors to Kill Devil HIlls indulge in fishing and crabbing, quiet kayaking, robust surfing or parasailing, peaceful seaside cycling and that favorite, toes-in-the-sand enjoyment of the beach. This barrier island township is the center of the Northern beach and home to about 7,000 year-round residents. Summer welcomes visitors anxious to share the natural landscapes and village-like appeal. Savor long stretches of Atlantic views and silky sands. If you’re a history buff, visit area lighthouses and the National Memorial honoring Wilbur and Orville Wright, who accomplished the first controlled powered flight in 1903. In nearby Kitty Hawk, Seascape Golf Links challenge players with changing elevations and coastal landscapes. A popular day trip just 17 miles to the southwest, the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Elizabeth Gardens and live performances of “The Lost Colony” combine to preserve and present the background of Native American culture and Sir Walter Raleigh’s colonization efforts in the late 1500’s.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

Park where visitors can see a replica of the Wright Brothers' plane and receive an entertaining history of flight.

We visited this attraction on a sunny Saturday in October. The cost was $10/adult and lots of free parking. We first walked around the grounds and saw the old "runway", sheds, and climbed up Kill Devil Hill to see the monument and view of the town. Then we joined the narrated tour by one of the Park Rangers, she was very informative and animated! We then spent the rest of our time touring inside the info. center and got our "passports" stamped in the Gift Store! From the top of the hill, we noticed a full scale scene of the first flight and stopped by on our drive out....very nice, all the "characters" immortalized in bronze along with the plane. A very nice "park", museum and history lesson.

My wife was looking for a very specific piece of driftwood to use as a centerpiece and saw this place as we were driving by. The owner is very friendly. He is knowledgeable of the area and easy going. We thought the prices were fair for everything we looked at in the store. There is a good selection of bird related decor items and a. few turtles and others as well. The driftwood prices were very cheap! Much less than anywhere else we had seen. Nice local place to get some unique pieces.

Our family visits every year, rainy day or not, to paint a ceramic. On rainy days, you have to go early or else be put on a waiting list. There is a coffee stop that sells a few pastries and has a few tables next door. You pay a fee to paint and another one for each ceramic piece (price varies), and you receive your choice of five colors. You select the colors from a plate showing the colors.. You can select more colors for an extra charge. They will refill them. It was $290 to paint six pieces. We were there 4.5 hours due to the complexity of painting for two of the pieces (the snake mug and a many sided vase) - See the photos uploaded separately. The ladies were nice and did not try to hurry us out even though there was a waiting list and most people were there much shorter times. There were a lot of empty space on the shelves to select your item to paint when we went on a Monday but on Friday, the shelves were fully stocked with many wonderful new pieces to paint. They just got a new shipment in. It takes four days to fire your piece before you can get them back. If you have to leave before it is done, then they can mail them to you. They have always arrived fine.
