It took some effort to get to and from Kong Lor, but for us the trip to the cave made it worth it. At the park entrance you pay 65,000kip per person for entry to the park and your return boat ticket. Then follows a pleasant walk through woodland to the boat launch area. On the way there are several, excellent quality, detailed information boards about the caves, formation and surrounding countryside. We checked in at the boat office and were handed over to our guide. We walked around the lake - which is a lovely cool spot for a swim after your cave experience, so would recommend wearing swimwear under your clothes - and into the cave entrance where we were handed our lifejackets and the boat was made ready. About 1/4 of the way into the cave there is a stop at an area of spectacular stalagmites and stalactites, which are lit up and you are free to explore at your leisure on foot. The underfoot surface is a little uneven at times, so you need your headtorch on. Then back on the boat for the remainder of the trip through. Once emerging from the cave there is a short trip along the river before disembarking at a collection of cafes and a handicraft shop. Again you can spend as long as you like here, we had a couple of drinks and got lunch for our driver, then took a short walk up the road to take in the spectacular scenery. Back on board for the return journey after which we had a refreshing swim in the lake. In total we spent 3-4 hours for our trip out. FYI, below are details of how we got in and out of the area as I struggled to find information about it when researching! Vientiane to Kong Lor I booked bus tickets through Baolau website. 10am bus, 130,000kip each Free songthaew pick up from city centre hotel at 9am (arranged via email from bus company) to the southern bus station Medium size (30 seat) local bus, various pick ups and drop offs, with lunch break and comfort breaks Drop off at junction near Na Hin, then songthaew 25,000kip each to Kong Lor cave Arrived about 6.15pm We stayed at Kong Lor cave guesthouse, which is just a two minute walk from the park entrance and a selection of nice restaurant options nearby. Kong Lor to Thakhek Songthaew pick up at various guest houses, starts nearest cave at 6am. 75,000kip each Many pick ups and drop offs along the way. Be prepared for a cramped, uncomfortable journey Drop off at Thakhek songthaew station at midday - also stops at the Thai border in Thakhek and the inter provincial bus station Then a tuk tuk to the town centre 25,000kip total

The Thakhek Loop is an amazing experience that you really need to do if you are in Laos. I rented a scooter in Thakhek and made the loop in 3 days. From my point of view, this was enough time but other people usually do it in 4 days. During the loop, you’ll see a lot of beautiful landscapes (and different!), you’ll cross many local villages (the real Laos!) and you’ll meet a lot of nice people. The Konglor Cave which is the highlight of the loop is listed as UNESCO World Heritage and is absolutely beautiful and astonishing (the cave in the pictures is not the Konglor Cave but the Dragon Cave, still incredibly beautiful). Don’t miss that if you’re travelling to Laos ;)

After reading the description in the guidebook, we weren’t convinced about visiting this cave, however as we had a spare day in Thahkek we decided to go. We are glad we did as it turned out to be the best cave we’ve ever seen. Entrance fee is 30,000 each and includes entry to the east side of the cave (not that amazing), however for a further 20,000 per person you can take the boat ride to the west side of the cave. This is a must!!! The boat ride is spectacular (700m) and once you get off the boat on the west side, the guide gave us a tour of the cave (about an hour and a bit walking) which was incredible. It was also super quiet and we were the only tourists there so we had the whole cave to ourself! If you do one thing in Thakhek, do this!
