Spent the whole Summer May 26 - Sept 18 on the Kenai stay in Kalifornski Beach. This is a good jumping-off point for all areas on the Kenai Peninsula fishing and non-fishing. The City of Kenai is a short 10 min away, Soldotna 20 min, Kasilof River 25 min, Ninilchik 50 min, Homer 1hr 40min, Capitan Cook State Park 40 min, Bings Landing 40 min, Skilak Lake 50 min, Russian River 1hr and Seward 2 hours away. Kenai has an airport with 25min fights from Anchorage for $70 - $90 each way on Ravin Airlines or rent a car and drive the scenic Seward Hwy to the Sterling Hwy (3+ hrs depending on traffic and Summer construction) in the Winter I'm told around 5K to 8K reside in the area but at the height of the Summer Salmon run 40k - 50k visitor flock into the Kenai - Soldotna area. The Kenai Penisula is large compared to what you see on an Alaska map so a car is a must... and rental cars are not cheap, the best deals might be a local company, not a large rental car company like at most airports. The best trip (since I worked at a local lodge) seemed to be the Fly-in across the Cook Inlet. several local private small airlines book these trips. We used Alaska West Air out of Nikiski just north of Kenai on the Kenai Spur Hwy. This year the Kasilof River was a better producer of fish than the Kenai and the regulations changed less often too. July is the time of the year for locals (only) to use dip nets and it can be fun to watch for a brief period. The Commercial Fishermen are also out with their set-nets. Be sure to talk to the locals about where and how to fish for the different species of salmon in the rivers they are all different. The halibut season was awesome all year with a 145 lbs being the largest I saw, I got a 75lbs.
