Things to do in Kauai, Hawaii (HI): The Best Other Outdoor Activities

May 27, 2021 Leonarda Pillsbury

Relaxing and pristine Kauai (the Garden Island) is the least commercially developed of the Hawaiian islands. Waterfalls, scenic drives and more than 60 beaches dot the landscape. Some beaches have great snorkeling, others offer child-friendly tidal pools and some are perfect for all kinds of water sports. Dry-land activities include hiking the Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali coastline, taking a day trip to Waimea Canyon and experiencing life on a sugar plantation at Grove Farm Homestead Museum.

Napali Raft AdventureDeparting out of Hanalei Bay, this is the most fun and efficient way to see the Napali coastline.Check in at Tahiti Nui Restaurant in Hanalei town. From there we shuttle you to the water, where you board a dinghy that takes you to your rigid-hull inflatable raft which is anchored just offshore in the famous Hanalei Bay and the adventure begins! The Napali Coast comes into view just minutes after leaving Hanalei Bay. The dramatic cliffs, caves, waterfalls, and white-sand beaches will have you in awe from the start. Your knowledgeable Captain and crew will share the history and legends of this enchanting area, which was once home to hundreds of Hawaiians.Along the way we will be looking for sea life, including dolphins, turtles, whales (in season), seabirds, and even mountain goats can often be spotted high up on the cliffs. Your Captain will anchor at one of several protected shallow reef areas that are teeming with tropical fish. We provide all of your snorkel gear and instruction so you can get the most out of your adventure. After snorkeling we will take some time to relax and enjoy the magnificent coastline. We provide a tasty sandwich lunch, with chips, soft drinks, juices, water, and cookies for dessert. When you have had your fill, we will make our way back to Hanalei Bay.Both Adventurer II & III are super-fast, modern, rigid-hull inflatable rafts. These comfortable vessels should not be confused with a Zodiac-type rubber raft, they’re made with channeled fiberglass hulls that cut through the waves. The efficient design and twin 225hp outboard motors allow for top speeds up to 30 knots. Both of our Napali rafts are fast and comfortable with forward facing padded seats. Dive ladders and fresh water showers offer the perfect platform for snorkeling. These vessels offer stadium-style, cushioned seating and even an enclosed marine toilet. They are designed for comfort as well as speed and safety.

Kauai Beach Boys

Steeped in the tradition of 50’s and 60’s, the Kauai Beach Boys of today are caretakers of a golden era gone by. The original Kalapaki Beach Boy, Percy Kinimaka , surfed, paddled, played music and shared his aloha on the very same beach we call home today. Though there will never be another Percy Kinimaka, his legacy and that of all the Hawaiian Beach Boys are the foundation of everything we do. Under the same ownership since 1983, Kauai Beach Boys is Kauai’s original surf school and beach concession. We are a family of water enthusiasts eager to share our passion for the ocean. We all share a deep respect for water, an unadulterated love for surfing and paddling, and pride in our chosen profession. Kauai Beach Boys is also Kauai’s most complete ocean fun headquarters. With stand up paddling, surfing, canoe paddling, sailing, kayaking, snorkeling, body boarding, and just plain beach bumming… if its at the beach we’ve got you covered.

My husband, 12 year old daughter & I loved our surfing lesson with Marcus. We had the best time because he was such an amazing instructor! All 3 of us rode 3+ long waves in & it was awesome. Marcus sets you up for the ideal conditions to be success- in positioning, timing & the big push he gives to get going. It was great that his assistant Elijah was there to help us navigate where to wait for our turn, etc. Lunch at Duke’s after was delicious & a fabulous setting to let us relish in our new surfing skills. Awesome experience from start to finish!

Driving through the tunnel of trees on the way to Koloa is a must---you turn left off the main highway and its as if time reverts to a simpler era. The greenery is magnificent, local flora and fauna at its best. On each of our visits to Kauai, we always start with this journey, its almost as if the island is welcoming you home.
