Things to do in Kampala, Central Region: The Best Gift & Specialty Shops

October 22, 2021 Alice Mieles

Near the banks of Lake Victoria, Kampala, the capital of Uganda, is a lively city with a long history. Before the British, the city was the capital of the Buganda Kingdom, and remains so to this day. The city sits on several hills, each housing an important government or religious building. Kasubi Hill is the home of the Kasubi Tombs, a sacred burial ground of Buganda Kings. The Uganda Museum sits atop Kololo Hill, and features a hands-on collection of traditional musical instruments.

I stopped in during the Christmas Market, and ended up running out twice to get more cash, everything was so cute! The clothing is very well made, and the designer knows exactly what will look good on your body (I doubted at first but she knows her stuff!). The jewelry is gorgeous and there's also a selection of high-quality natural soaps and skin care products. This is a must-visit!

I'm collecting beads from around the world to make into a necklace someday, so wanted locally made beads from Uganda. I found very nice ones here, along with other beautiful beads from east and west Africa (and other imported beads). They have good quality, locally made jewelry and other products for sale as well. I also took the paper beadmaking class, which was fun and informative, and I made a bracelet (picture attached) as a wonderful souvenir. They also offer a Tuesday evening class where you design and create a piece of jewelry while drinking a glass of wine! All at a very reasonable price. Overall a great little place that offers an off the beaten tourist path experience in Kampala. Highly recommended!

I don´t have enough wonderful things to say about this place. The owners, Deepa and Rossi are such lovely people. world travelers with such interesting views and absolutely so engaging to speak with. I learned so much about Uganda, Murchison National Park and various environmental and social issues from Rossi. The food is top notch - I was there three days in a row completing some assignments and there´s just not a disappointing item on the menu. The desserts are especially delicious. Enjoy your time there..it feels like an oasis!
