Kaliningrad Oblast (Russian: Калинингра́дская о́бласть, Kaliningradskaya oblast) is a federal subject of the Russian Federation that is located on the coast of the Baltic Sea. As an oblast, its constitutional status is equal to each of the other 84 federal subjects. Its administrative center is the city of Kaliningrad, formerly known as Königsberg. It is the only Baltic port in the Russian Federation that remains ice-free in winter. According to the 2010 census, it had a population of 941,873.

Friedland Gates Museum

Local history museum “Friedland gate” is located in similarly named architectural monument of XIX century- town gates “Friedland”, which were build in 1862 and which used to be a part of town fortifications of Koenigsberg.The museum is dedicated to the history of prewar Koenigsberg. And it’s block-stone road “leads” to the past of forever gone town Koenigsberg…Under the gates, combining he real block-stone road and it’s image on old prewar photos which are projected on lateral walled up embrasures; begins the unbelievable by force of emotional impact stroll across the streets of old town, “taking away” the walls and opening out the borders of time and space. The carts creak, the walking by ladies heels click, the children laugh – Friedland gate opens the time portal to the town which no longer exists. The “stroll” lasts exactly an hour and during this time you may “pass” according logically build route the whole historical center of the town look into town windows of the shops, cafes, pharmacies (the museum windows are designed in the form of street windows), to bargain at the fish market, and at the end of the stroll, just by one step come from a virtual park to find yourself in a real landscape park spreading across the bounds of Friedland gate and made on the place of former fortifications.

Museum of the History of the Town of Sovetsk

Museum of the history of the town of Sovetsk was founded on 6 April 1987 as a branch of the Kaliningrad regional history and Art Museum. On 22 August 1992 it welcomed its first visitors and from 1 March 1999 became a municipal institution of culture. The Museum Exposition reflects the highlights of the centuries-old history of the town: The foundation by the Knights of the Teutonic Order; The presentation of official city rights in 1552 by the First Duke of Prussia Albrecht of Brandenburg; The conclusion of Tilsit Peace Treaty in 1807 by the emperors of Russia and France - Napoleon I, Alexander I and the King of Prussia Frederick William III; The events of the First and Second World Wars. Part of the exposition is devoted to the famous People of Tilsit: poet-the-romance Max von Schenkendorf; writer and poet Johannes Bobrowski; Lithuanian philosopher and public figure Vilhelmas Storosta-Vydūnas; a playwright and writer of "Trip to Tilsit"- Hermann Sudermann. Post war fate of the city, which was renamed Sovetsk is reflected in the exhibition "Sovetsk. The start of Biography».
