April 30, 2022 Venice Greaves

Coffee drinkers will recognize Kona as the source of some of the best beans in the world. Get your blood pumping with a walk along the “Royal Footsteps” waterfront stretch of Alii Drive, or take stargazing to the next level with a nighttime visit to the summit of Mauna Kea. Waterfalls, volcanoes, and soft black sands are just some of the natural features that make Kailua unique. Shimmy your hips at a hula-filled luau, or get an eyeful of native history at the Kamakahonu compound.

My wife and I hiked from Hapuna Beach to Mauna Lea Beach, both of them are amazing. Beautiful lava rock shoreline and easy hiking path with incredible views and almost always serene weather. Highly recommend!

I just discovered this gem of a botanical garden on the eastern side of the Old Airport Runway in Kailua Kona. I just happened upon it and intend to return again to revel in its splendor. There were cactus and succulents seemingly growing right out of the lava! As I strolled the paved .7 mile loop trail I encountered only a few other visitors and several community people hard at work caring for the garden. I saw the biggest barrel cactus, brilliant flamboyant flowers, plumeria, and bromeliads seemingly lit up with vibrant colors. There are a lot of quirky little features to catch your eye and it is amazing how diverse and spectacular the plantings are in this free, wonderful place to explore. And the ocean with a long sandy beach is just across the runway!

This is a trail (multiple trails) just north of Kona. If you like hiking, be sure to add it to your list and bring a GPS or use the ALL TRAILS app so you can see where you are going and what turns to take as there is very little signage. Quite an up and down and was a good workout for me! Dense rainforest like area just about 20 minutes up the hill from Kona central.

What a great bike shop! Friendly doorman, Tony who was so attentive to everyone arriving, it was like being welcomed by an old friend. Rented a TT bike for an afternoon, nice quality Felt bike. Staff super helpful, could not do enough to make sure it was adjusted right for me. Attached my pedals etc. Only thing they could improve on is to add a second bottle cage. Fast, efficient and friendly is a good way to sum them up. Plenty parking outside and really easy access to the Queen K highway. Lots of lovely gear in hear to purchase too.
