Simply one word ‘fantastic’ . I enjoyed my first experience with screen printing so much I just had to go back a second time. Mohit and Kunj were so helpful and informative and I ended up with amazing results for my first experience at screen printing. I finished the session with a lovely cotton scarf with a matching tote bag to take away at the end of the class. Creatis really is a creative workshop with miles of inspiration at hand. Have a look at their website for all classes on offer, and book online, all at very reasonable rates. I am totally hooked and will make Creatis my first stop when back in Jaipur.

Dye it Yourself

Dye it Yourself ! is a state of the art workshop where you can learn the art of Natural dyeing, block printing & shibori tie dye. Our aim is to make it a habit rather than just a one time activity for people to make a paradigm shift from ready made chemically dyed garments to natural dyed home made clothes.

This is a great venue to try your hand at the old craft of dyeing material and making your own scarf or clothing. We did the small group tour and loved it. It commences with a tutorial on how the dyes are made from various plants and vegetables this being followed by a practical experience of taking a white piece of fabric and designing tie sites before immersing in various large pots of different colored dye solutions, then draining and washing out excess dye before fixing and drying – we all came away with great souvenir scarves and garments. The crew taking the class were excellent and helpful as well as serving light refreshments. I went along, together with another male friend, as our wives were keen to do the class and I must admit we loved it and learnt new skills. Cannot recommend the Dye It Yourself experience highly enough.

While visiting Jaipur, myself and my two adult daughters attended a 1 day block printing workshop at Studio Bagru, located one hour outside Jaipur. The workshop was an absolute highlight of our visit to Rajasthan. It offered us a unique opportunity of an immersive experience into the cultural, social and artistic aspects of life in a village community of craftsmen/women. During a tour of the village we have met artisans involved in the different parts of block printing process such as dying, washing, printing but also print block carving. Jeremy, the founder, was our guide during the tour. I was impressed by his knowledge of textile making trade and in particular its impact on the livelihood of local communities. Asking our questions he gave us a lot of interesting and very educational information about his motives for the Bagru Studio project. In fact, we had an interesting discussion about the current public discourse on the real cost of clothes we buy and its impact on the slowly changing consumer habits in the western world. We then got creative printing our own textiles (you can choose from different types, rug, scarves etc) getting all the way wonderful kind guidance from the artisans themselves and other members of Jeremy’s teams. The day ended with a delicious lunch (it was great to get guidance from Jeremy and Raj on the Indian cuisine). I strongly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in the preservation of traditional craftsmanship and the related business initiatives geared towards improving the livelihood of economically under-developed communities. We all would benefit from getting additional education in this regard. Jeremy and his team were great hosts and we were also so lucky to benefit from Jeremy’s kind and much appreciated advice concerning our stay in Jaipur.

Hindi hour is a small and very personal school. I have spent two weeks there and this time was a strong impetus for my conversational skills and grammar. Different teachers give you diverse experience of how the language sounds and can be used. The premises are also very nice, the family is very supportive and welcome. We had the luck to spend Divali with them. Beside the lessons there is constant help in organizing cultural activities, shopping or whatever else you wish. The trip to the camel fair to Pushkar was my highlight. The food was also great, in two weeks we tried all sorts of Rajastani delicious dishes.
