Setia Darma House of Mask and Puppets

Reviewed By CKF

We saw Setia Darma House of Mask and Puppets recommended in a guide book and put it on our list while in Ubud. First, adjacent to the parking lot, you'll see a small gift shop, selling authentic Balinese masks, shadow puppets, and jewelry. We liked this, but is was rather underwhelming and we sighed. We thought there would be more. Well, keep walking! You WILL find more! On the other side of a park-like green space you will find a museum housed in four buildings (at least). The masks range from tiny to huge, multi-person varieties, meant to be worn during annual festivals and such. The masks came in every size, shape and facial expression. WOW! We went from being underwhelmed to overwhelmed! You will marvel at the shadow puppet collection and the intricate artistry and craftsmanship on display. How could we be the only visitors there? Spent so much time browsing and reading all the cards (English included) that our guide must have wondered where we went. Well designed, well planned, lots of space to walk and admire. What a find! Do not miss this hidden treasure, just a short distance from the Elephant Cave (which was a let down). ENJOY!

I really liked this musuem. Food and talking to locals are two of the best ways to learn about a culture. So is sitting back and observing it. So, also - is art. There is loads to learn about the Ubud and Balinese culture at this musuem. Once again, lovely airy buildings to wander through a short taxi ride up from the main street. Well worth a few hours of wandering around.

Museum PASIFIKA

Visiting the Pasifika art collection is one of a time opportunity to relax in an oasis of tranquillity and to view an extraordinary collection of paintings and other artworks. It is housed in an exquisite modern Balinese building designed by Popo Danes, one of the most celebrated Balinese architect. There will be Indonesian and Balinese artworks but also numerous paintings by those bohemian artists who came from Europe and other parts of the world starting from the 1930s, succumbing to the spells of the enchanting tropical Island. Stroll in the well-manicured garden, take some selfies, taste local delicacies with a 'kopi Bali', and above all enjoy the art. For a complete Bali experience, come and visit Pasifika.

I took a tour in the Museum while my family doing the shopping as during fasting month and Lebaran festive this shop offers discounted price for certain items. For a certain reason, Danar Hadi is not my favourite batik. The museum situated at the back of the shop. A knowledgeable, pleasant, humorous and talkative gentlemen guided a small group of visitors. And it was an eye opening to me. I learned almost everything about batik : its history, philosophy, values, terminologies, designs, painting, dyeing process, materials, best ways of batik maintenance/storage, and fantastic prices of vintage batiks etc. Most, if not all, vintage batiks were from the Danar hadi founder/owners collections. Some of them priced more than IDR 5 B (or more than USD 350 K !!!). From here than I understand and credit the government of Indonesia's effort to make Indonesian Batik as the Unesco Heritage. And I loved batik now even more than before. Highly recommended to every one. Really. And you will get zilions of information for a very cheap tour (IDR 35,000 per pax, then you can buy items to ad to you pile of batik collection......

Every time I go to Ubud I make sure to stop by this Museum. Its a beatiful set of buildings around a courtyard. Inside the artwork is really magnificent and I love to walk around, always treated like a guest, and learn the stories behind some phenomenal works. Its a truly unique and special place, and there is an enormous bank of work by up and coming artists that you can purchase and have sent back to wherever you might. It really is a place I've developed a lifelong relationship with already. Singlehandedly, Museum Rudana has inspired me to start collecting Balinese art. I am not an art critic by any means, but this place is a gem.

Ogoh-Ogoh Museum

Reviewed By williamsM29HU - Kobe, Japan

Ogoh-Ogoh is a wonderful little museum, a store-house really, of beautiful and fantastical creatures. The entry price is low and the staff enjoy talking about the characters represented as well as the parade. Good for kids and adults but it is 30 minutes at most. If you are nearby for the temple do stop in at the museum.
