Red Hill - Lokpaching

Reviewed By P_and_T_Herefordshir - Herefordshire, United Kingdom

Red Hill, 17km south of Imphal, was the site of a decisive battle between Allied and Japanese forces in 1944, and a brand new museum, opened here in June 2019. Called the India Peace Museum, it has won design awards, and rightly so. It is beautifully laid out and very informative, with just the right amount of material about the battle and its effect on the area to keep you interested without becoming bored. A video based on contemporary film footage brings home the conditions under which the men on both sides fought. The museum also includes a replica of a local farmhouse and a display of the costumes of many of the Manipuri tribes, whilst there is a Japanese war memorial by the entrance. All in all, well worth a visit.
