Calais Winery

Reviewed By BreadmanAustin - Austin, United States

Took some friends to Calais for their first visit and they were blown away and raved about the great wines and experience. I have known Ben for years and have found his wines to be consistently delicious. With the opening of The French Connection nearby Calais now concentrates on wines from Bordeaux varietals and The French Collection has his wines from Rhone varietals. All wines are made using 100 % Texas grapes. Calais is a low visibility operation. No sign! (Look for the French flag at the road.) The tasting room and winery are in a building dug into the ground. The wines have a definite "French" profile influence and are very well made. This is a rather small winery with high demand. Wine releases often sell out quickly. Prices are high but reasonable for the quality. Tasting prices are reasonable. Calais wines are sold only at the winery (with few exceptions.) A great stop for those who want to experience some of the very best Texas wines. Highly Recommended!

We stopped at William Chris during a weekend in Texas hill country on a wine tasting R&R trip from Louisiana. We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful ambiance outside during our picnic lunch overlooking the vineyard and hills. The food was delicious! The front desk staff were very friendly and happy that we were there. We had Kyo as our sommelier and she was wonderful! Very informative and enthusiastic about their wine and the process that they use to make them. Had some smooth fruit forward medium bodied reds (which are my husband and I’s favorite). We will be back! 5 star experience!

Tejas Winery

Small, boutique winery located in Hye, TX. Enjoy wine tasting, or have a glass of wine inside or on our porch and take in the beauty of The Hill Country.

After a series of subpar wines at Texas Hill Country wineries, a new winery that has great wine and beautiful vistas. They had 2 white wines, muscat & dry muscat (both very good) and 2 reds. My favorite is the Tempranillo which would be excellent with spanish tapas. It's a medium body red with mild spicy and black cherry overtones. Really enjoyed the visit. The owners are very knowledgeable and have obviously been planning to open this winery for some time. This is a brand new winery that has hit the ground running. Get in while you can!

We had a wonderful time at French Connection this weekend! We did a reserve tasting with our friends for my husband’s birthday. Bill was our tasting guide and he was both informative & fun. The charcuterie board that came with our tasting was beautiful & delicious with some unique food items. Of course the wines & views are fabulous as well. We really enjoyed our experience & the attention to detail. We will definitely enjoy this experience again!

We stopped at the Horn tasting room and could not have been happier with the experience! We were greeted by Kayla, who walked us through their tasting menu. We hadn't planned on buying any wine today, but the price and the quality made it our favorite stop of the day. We loved it so much that we stopped on our way home to try the Brandy and grab a few more bottles! Do not skip this Vineyard!
