A less well known side of Hvar, is how well suited it is to star gazing. The skies are stunningly clear, which lends itself to some out of this world star gazing on the hills above. Because of these clear skies, Hvar has its own Observatory ( which you can’t visit as a tourist) and so we came by this company who organise stargazing evenings. It is run by a very knowledgeable Astro physicist called Yasha who just happens to work at the observatory and on occasion undertakes some advisory work with NASA! One of Yasha’s charming team took us to the hill top, which has panoramic views of Hvar from the other, non touristic side where we caught the sunset. Yasha then gave us a very informative and easy-to-follow presentation about Astronomy, before we headed to the telescope - a marvellous modern piece of machinery which linked to a software to point exactly towards what we wanted to see. We were very lucky to have Jupiter and Saturn within our sight and Yasha went on to show us stars and constellations together with far flung galaxies which were as far as 2.5 million light years away. Truly remarkable. It was such an enjoyable and informal evening where we were given the opportunity to literally see what was going on above us in real time, by a team of enthusiasts who supported a very knowledgeable, highly regarded scientist. I would highly recommend anyone to experience this ! Thank you team!

So little and so rich Hvar is like a diamond of Adriatic crown. The best is to start the visit from cathedral’s square renaissance bell tower which is an unforgettable sight in the evenings when its white stone illuminated by the last light of the day and you can see right through the structure’s narrow arches. From there you take directly to the St. Stephen’s Cathedral and then down to the Town’s “place” (central square) - the center of Hvar’s social world, with cafes, restaurants, shops and the 16th-century fountain. After a short rest in one of outside coffees keep going to magnificent Renaissance monastery with a beautiful bell-tower, and then visit Hvar’s Loggia, which once was the Venetian governor’s palace. Moreover, finish your trip with Hvar Town’s main square with a stairway leading to the Porta di Datallo. Can you imagine that it was a Venetian fortress from the 1500s? It is a great pleasure of real history!
