Les Gorges du Fier is definitely worth a visit - it's beautiful to walk through. We were there towards the end of August and went early in the morning which I would recommend to avoid the heat of the day. It's also better to go earlier to avoid the crowds, whilst not huge, there are parts of the walk where it's single person due to rocks poking out onto the walkway. As far as getting there, we organised a taxi from the tourist centre in Annecy which cost about 30 euros - not cheap, but the public transport is complicated to get there otherwise. And the restrooms are dodgy, to say the least. But aside from that, totally worth the visit, I'm so glad we did it!!

Excellent views of the mountains, great photo opportunities, fun cable car / gondola ride down to the steps and very well made ice cave. Something to be wary of is that the cable car / gondola only takes you so far down. Thereafter you have to climb down several hundred steps (I think approximately 500) and then climb back up the steps after viewing the ice cave. Would nevertheless recommend this as a must do / see in Chamonix.
