Sokolski Monastery

Reviewed By antoanetamironova

The monastery was founded in 1833 by Archimandrite Joseph, later known in the struggle for ecclesiastical autonomy as the Uniate Archbishop Joseph Sokolsky. He came here from the Trojan Monastery with Hieromonk Agapius in 1833. By the entrance of the nearby cave, a small wooden church was built, and the following year it was demolished in the same place, with the funds and assistance of the villagers from the nearby villages of Etara and Nova mahala, who built today's large temple. The Sokolovsky Monastery is also actively involved in national liberation struggles. On July 31, 1856, it established Captain Grandfather Nikola's detachment, with the intention of making it the center of the uprising, and during the April Uprising, on May 1, 1876, the detachment of the governor Tsanka Dustabanov was formed here. Vasil Levski also found shelter here. During the Russo-Turkish War, the monastery was turned into a military hospital. A small museum exhibit keeps relics of the struggle for liberation.
