Friday 20th November and we drove to remote fishing village of Ajuy, on the western coast of the Island. In truth we were hoping to find a beach where we could spend a few hours. Instead we found the natural phenomimena that are the Caves of Ajuy. We parked up in the free parking area outside the village as only residents can drive in the village. So we walked from here, short distance, to the beach through the narrow stree. We were totally amazed by the sight that greeted us. The wild crashing waves onto the black sand and rocks along the beach and the dramatic cliffs that contained the caves. We made our way across the beach to the pathway that takes visitors along the coast to the various viewing points to see the caves and experience the incredible scenery and the force of the Atlantic Ocean. Walking along the top pathway it takes about 15 minutes to the furthest view point. On the way back there is a small lower pathway, only lasts about 5 minutes, here it is possible to look inside the remain of the lime kilns (Hornos). When walking back to the beach, on the top pathway, the only route back, it is possible to look down into the kilns. Initially the pathway is paved and even underfoot, that soon changes and it becomes a rocky cliff path. Would recommend wearing sturdy footwear as this is not really flip flop terrain. When we visited it was exceptionally windy so pointless try to wear a hat or cap unless it was tied on. Not what we were expecting to see but what a bonus.

Friday 13th November we were on our way to visit Aguas Verde and the road signs took us to Playa del Valle. It is here that we parked our car and took the cliff pathway along the coast to see the pools. There journey from our hotel, Riu Palace Tres Islads, to here was 50 kilometres, mostly on very good roads, apart from the last few hundred metres which was on an unsurfaced road. Oh my word what an experience, the sound of the Atlantic Ocean pounding the lava coastline, the salty spray rising up and the colour of the water. The raw force of nature at work and it's best. We did not encounter another person as we walked along the coast. It was difficult to know when to stop and turn back as around the next corner was a sight as wonderful as the previous one. The shapes and formations of lava were absolutely astounding. The various coloured layers of rocks was fascinating and so eye catching. Large holes created in the lava, filled with bright green water, hence the name of the place "Green Pools".

This volcano crater is near the village of Lajares. Is’s not a difficult climb and it worth every step you take to get to the top. At half way to the top you can see a range of three volcanos. When you reach the top you can see the 70 meters crater of the volcano and you can walk round it or just sit and enjoy the view and the wind on your face. While walking around, you will meet some cheerful squirrels which will no doubt to come close to you just in case you have some food or water for them. Don’t forget to apply sun cream and a cap would also be handy.
