Things to do in Florence, Tuscany: The Best Classes & Workshops

July 11, 2021 Terina Blouin

Florence is an art historian’s dream. The Galleria dell'Accademia bursts with works by Michelangelo, who is entombed within the frescoed walls of the Basilica di Santa Croce. Budding photographers can snap pics of the Ponte Vecchio bridge, and serious shoppers can spend a blissful afternoon wandering the shops of Piazza Santo Spirito. Tuscan cuisine pays homage to the region’s bounty. Swipe a hunk of crusty bread across a pool of local olive oil and you’ll be instantly transported to your happiest place.

Accidental Tourist

The Accidental Tourist was born in the spring of 1998 offering the first single-day hands-on cooking class in Tuscany. We welcome the curious and open-minded traveler in the heart of our Tuscan home, for an authentic yet magical experience. We take a maximum of 8 people, but will go with as few as one: we never leave the solo traveler behind. We welcome families with children as we know how challenging it can be to travel with the young ones in the Old Country. AND, we charge for our tours only if our guests are happy to pay for their day with us.

Wanna be Italiano!

Our classes are offered as a view into a typical Tuscan cuisine. Classes are small and intimate. First step: grocery shopping at the central market!! You will go shopping with the chef at the central market picking up the ingredients for your lunch. You will meet the butchers, the bakers, and the farmers selling vegetables from their gardens. You will learn how to distinguish the highest quality ingredients and as an added bonus, how to bargain! You will taste local foods & wines. After this fun experience you will reach the house and start the lessons in a private kitchen. A true hands-on experience, and you will prepare your own meal, made of Bruschetta, Fresh Home-made Pasta, and a main course, accompanied with a selection of Chianti wines. As you will eat your own food, you’d better be an attentive student while the Chef is teaching!

This was a great experience. We could’ve skipped the marketplace in the morning but the cooking and endless wine drinking was fantastic. It was so satisfying making our pasta from scratch and seeing how to make 2 kinds of sauces. It was a ton of fun and my teenagers loved it. They can’t wait to get home and cook a meal!

I spent 10 days learning as much from Marcella as we could about Italian cooking, the history, techniques and recipes! She is so knowledgable, entertaining and a great teacher! The 10 days is not enough to cover even a 10th of Italian cuisine, but we covered more than expected. From pasta varieties, basic preparations, meats, fishes, vegetables and gnocchi! Highly recommended course, thank you Marcella! :-)

InFlorence Academy

The school, the oldest state recognized school of foreign languages in Florence, can be found in Palazzo Guadagni, a Renaissance palace dating from the 16th century which is located in the middle of the old town centre near the Ponte Vecchio. The historic school building, renovated in 1992, has eleven classrooms, a multimedia learning centre, a lecture room and a student lounge and is in a quaint Italian quarter. The school is in the centre of the oldest part of Florence, 300 m from the Pitti Palace, 500 m from the Ponte Vecchio and about 15 minutes' walk from the cathedral (il Duomo) and from the railway station. The building is the work of the architect Cronaca and was built between 1502 and 1508. In the 1860's, it was extensively improved by the architect Poggi with the addition of beautiful frescoes. The school was completely renovated, taking care to enhance the original features but also making use of the best of modern Italian design to produce a stunning mix of new and old.

Cook Eat Italian

Cook Eat Italian offers the best one day cooking class in Florence. Our local chef Manuela will take you through authentic Italian recipes in this hands-on small group class. Maximum class size 6 Persons in our kitchen in Florence. Also we offer cooking class+wine tasting in a countryside.

Reviewed By itsglo - Santa Cruz, United States

My sister and brother-in-law together with a friend and I attended Manuela's cooking class. I was expecting a commercial kitchen / school environment. What an absolute delight to find we were cooking in Manuela's own home and her adorable, very, very Italian kitchen. This was a truly hand-on experience. Under Manuelas, tuition, we prepped, cooked and assembled all the dishes, including making pasta from scratch. We then sat down at the table like one big family (there were 2 additional people in the class) to eat what we had prepared and cooked. Not only did we get to keep the recipes but Manuela also shared the Italian music list from Spotify that was playing in the background. Manuela is a gem, as his her beautiful little daughter who, it is obvious will follow in her mother's footsteps as an exceptional cook. I spend some time in Italy every year, and I'll be sure to go back to Manuela for another class.
