Things to do in Djerba Island, Medenine Governorate: The Best Sightseeing Tours

July 30, 2021 Randal Brittian

A large island, approximately 20 by 20 kilometers, Djerba lies just off the northeastern coast of Africa, in southeastern Tunisia, near the Libyan border. Set on the Gulf of Gabes, the island is known for an eclectic population of residents and tourists, splendid beaches and picturesque villages that feature distinctive, square, whitewashed houses. Houmt Souq is the one large town, with bustling markets and lively outdoor cafes. Djerba, which offers a pirate's castle and fortress-like mosques, is believed to have been the inspiration for Homer's Odyssey. Accessible from the south of Tunisia, a road originally built by the Romans connects the island to the mainland.

Initially I've booked a night tour to the Sahara dessert with Depart Travels, however faith has led this trip to be cancelled due to some technical errors. Instead of turning me down, Aymen has asked me what are on my wish list and has tailor made a trip proposal all for me privately. It wasn't a regret going on this trip. Ive set my expectation to be an average standards, however with the help of Aymen and the friendly locals, who Aymen has arranged for me to meet, have made me experience one of the best adventure I've ever done. Aymen himself drove me and explained each cities and villages we went to. Even after the trip of the day has ended, unlike any other guides who will just abandon you at your hotel, Aymen has invited me out for a beer and to chill the nights. He is a really kind and knowledgable man. I have done everything I've wanted and perhaps more thanks to Depart Travels. I highly recommend people to this agency and especially a tour with Aymen himself. Ps: He is an exceptional driver, especially on the off road dunes of the desert.

Three wildly disparate attractions – a museum of Islamic art, a heritage village and a reptile park – are on offer at this strange tourist attraction next to the Taguermes Lighthouse. The most popular element is 'Crocodile Island', an enclosure where semi-somnolent crocs recline on rocks in a large pool and are fed by keepers in a theatrical thrice-weekly spectacle. Even more impressive is the Lalla Hadria Museum, which showcases a world-class collection of calligraphy, costumes, ceramics, bronze work and carpets from Islamic countries. Though well-intentioned, the small heritage zone is underwhelming. It includes a hũch (house for an extended family built in the shape of a fort) with a makhzen dhiāf (greeting lodge), hanūt al fakh'khar (pottery workshop), matbakh (external kitchen), h'ovanet en'cīja (weaving hut) and mâassra (oil mill and press). The large, modern whitewashed complex includes souvenir shops and a few restaurants and cafes.
