Chand Baori (Step well)

Reviewed By NILIMA_11 - Mumbai, India

The step wells were constructed in the southwestern region of Gujarat around 600 AD; from there they spread north to Rajasthan . Step wells still exists in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi regions. However most of them are in ruins . They are known for unique, beautiful designs in architecture and remarkable in intricate carvings One such beautiful step wells known as Chand Baori which is oldest, largest and deepest (13 levels ) in this arid land of Rajasthan, Built in 9th century AD , by King Raja Chand of Gurjar dynasty. It is built in the city called Abhaneri ( city of brightness), next to Goddess Harshat mata temple . Harshat mata is know as a goddess of joy and brightness. Hence the connecting name of Abhaneri or Abha nagari and Chand Baori In ancient times, step wells were used as multi functional areas. It used to preserve water in months of summer, used as a means of rain harvesting, a place for meetings and socializing also to celebrate festivals and attend ceremonies. It was built near the temple and the ritual was to wash hand and feet in the step well before entering the temple of Godess Harshat mata for prayers. Harshat mata temple is dedicated to a goddess .Some believe that it is a Vaishnav temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu as well. The temple is in ruin condition but the carving on the pillars, shikhar and surrounding areas gives an impression of what it would have been as a living temple !! The temple and step wells are now a part of Archaeological survey of India. Abhaneri is about 90 kms from Jaipur and connects by road. There is nominal fee to visit the step well.

Harshat Mata Temple

Reviewed By Fletch101 - Melbourne, Australia

My wife and I visited the Harshat Mata Temple as part of a Golden Triangle tour with the TripaDeal group in February. Situated opposite the Step Well, this was a very interesting place to visit. Once again, shoes are not allowed when visiting the temple. We had the services of a guide who explained the story and history behind all the intricate carvings in the marble and stone around the temple. Ring the bell hanging from the roof as you enter the temple for good luck. Only down side was all the ruins scattered around the temple. Hopefully one day, they are able to put all the pieces of the puzzle back together again.

Harshat Mata Temple

Reviewed By arunsharma3116 - Pune, India

Harshat Mata temple is an ancient temple situated just next to Chand Baori (another hidden gem and marvelous architeture made during 8-9 century). Though the temple was partially destroyed by the invaders, but still the temple today is a as beautiful as it was in old days. Remnants of the destroyed temple are also kept inside the Chand Baori campus, so do take a look at them as well to understand how grand this temple was at ancient times. A true hidden gem, should not be missed when visiting Chand Baori nearby. Entry to this temple is free, of course.
