Things to do in Dallas, Texas (TX): The Best Movie Theaters

July 14, 2021 Joeann Galban

You may have all heard that everything is bigger in Texas. Well, Dallas does its best to fulfill that promise. You'll find several museums with vast art collections and fascinating specialty museums like The Sixth Floor Museum/Texas School Book Depository, which, though small in size, offers an immense amount of information about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. And of course, visit a local steakhouse for a terrific (and enormous) meal.

Movie lovers must attend movie festivals and regular movies viewing to experience friendly atmosphere and a historical building of Dallas. The theatre is located in a very nice restaurants area. We loved it.

The Texas Theatre

The Historic Texas Theatre opened in 1931 by eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes as a Robb Rowley Theater and became infamous in 1963 as the place Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested. In 2011 it was reopened by Aviation Cinemas formed by Barak Epstein, Adam Donaghey, Eric Steele and Jason Reimer. It is open 7 days a week playing the new release independent as well as classic repertory films. "The Texas" has also put on staged events, comedians and live music. The beautiful restored bar is open every day of the week.

We love the Texas theater for a host of reasons, not the least of which is the eclectic and creative choice of films they choose to offer, but also the inviting atmosphere of the place. There is a strange, almost anachronistic feeling about the theater. Maybe it's the building itself. Built in 1931 by Howard Hughes, the layout and architecture makes you feel like you are walking back in time to a smaller, more intimate world. To me, a senior who remembers attending Saturday afternoon matinees at similar theaters back in the fifties, there is a nostalgic flashback every time I enter the place. The lobby bar is usually packed on weekends with an eccentric mix of artists, millenials, goths, gays, geezers and goddesses all fully engaged with one another as if they were at a house party in Soho. We always have fun when we visit. You will to. Worth the drive.

Great place for a movie. Several screens but not crowded. They have some “major” movies and many independent movies.

I would classify this as my best theater experience in decades. I was in town on a business trip and a colleague recommended this place to me. On a whim I decided to go and catch a movie with some dinner and wine. I was so pleasantly surprised! Prior to going to the theater I paid for my ticket and selected my own seat online. When I arrived, all I had to do was check-in, walk to the theater and find my seat. A waiter brought me very nice menu that included an upscale selection of food, cocktails and wine, and it was all delivered in such a non-obtrusive manner as not to disturb my own movie (preview) viewing or others around me one bit. While I wouldn't call it budget-friendly, it didn't matter because the food and wine was high quality and totally worth it. The seat was a leather recliner with plenty of space to stretch out while easily accessing my food and beverage. Now I would be remiss if I didn't describe the actual movie experience. The huge movie screen had an exceptional picture and state-of-the-art sound system that delivered a superior high-quality movie experience that simply cannot be replicated at home. I will not soon forget this experience, and I am so happy that I selected the perfect movie, "Bohemian Rhapsody' to revel in those classic rock tunes!

We were so pleased to enjoy a movie at this theatre. It was so clean, had a great sound system, and many, many comfortable seats. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon with my husband. We didn't eat any food, but the food I saw looked great.
