Things to do in Cyclades, South Aegean: The Best Wineries & Vineyards

October 29, 2021 Claudia Navarrete

The Cyclades is a group of Greek islands with beautiful, white sandy beaches, rugged mountains and lush valleys. Glamorous Santorini and Mykonos attract the jetset, while lesser-known isles, such as Milos and Naxos, are the perfect places for beach lovers. Ruins, including the 11th-century Dorian settlement and volcanic ash-preserved Ancient Akrotiri in Santorini, amaze those with a bent for ancient history. Sifnos' cuisine wins it admirers. Hydrofoils, ferries and catamarans connect the islands.

Great wine tasting by a very knowledgeable hostess (who had a masters degree in winemaking!). She explained each wine and gave us a short tour about the property after! Dinner at the restaurant after the tasting was excellent! Service was very good and the food even better. It was very quiet with only a few other couples around which was very enjoyable and relaxing. Highly recommend visiting this winery! We went to a few top rated wineries around santorini and this was one of our favorites for sure!

Greek hospitality at its best! The food and wine pairing is outstanding, I strongly recommend the “Meze and wine experience”, you get to taste 7 great wines paired with lovely delicious traditional meze. The service, staff and location are fantastic! And if you’re lucky to have Nikitas to guide you and present you the wines, you’ll definitely have a super experience!

VSV winery

Volcanic Slopes Vineyards winery’s history goes back to the 18th century, as it was originally established as a “canava”. ‘Canava” in the local dialect of Santorini describes the place where the wine was made and stored. Our building was a traditional underground canava that was renovated in 2013, in order to host the VSV winery and our wine Pure.

We had a girls trip to Greece and intended to have a day exploring wineries on Santorini. A quick google search will show you there are so many to choose from, but something about the setting and the vibe of VSV stood out to me so we booked 3 afternoon tastings. Showed up apologetically a little late after getting lost, and our host was incredibly gracious and understanding. We discovered that this cave setting is WONDERFUL to cool off in and truly enjoy the flavors of the wines, learn a little history of the area and winemaking of Santorini, and relax. The tastings are all private as well which was a surprise for us upon arrival and made it that much more special and the best way to end our day. Words truly do not do justice to this cozy winery, and we have come back home singing its praises while still enjoying its wines.

Highly recommend visiting this winery. We chose the €50 tour and tasting, the tour consisted of about 20mins walking through the vineyards talking about the history of the winemaking on the island and of Domaine Sigalas - our guide Pablos, was superb and answered any question I threw at him, really fantastic knowledge. The wine tasting consisted of 8 wines - 6 whites, 1 rose, 1 red and 1 dessert wine. A real great introduction to Santorini wine, providing a broad range and showing the differences achievable with Assyrtiko wine (the main produce of Santorini). At the end we decided we would buy the dessert wine to take home but ended up buying the more expensive one after our host kindly offered us a tasting when we were deciding which to buy (it’s a 4.3 on Vivino and simply glorious). Overall strongly recommend this tour and tasting and give a huge commendation to Pablos for making the whole experience.
