Things to do in Cruz Bay, St. John: The Best Transportation

December 22, 2021 Carley Gatson

St. John’s vibrant main town and port, Cruz Bay is home to most of the 28-square-mile island’s restaurants, bars, stores and dive centers. Two-thirds of affluent St. John is a national park, and many safari buses and jeeps set out from Cruz Bay. Don’t miss local art and history at Elaine Ione Sprauve Museum or the pristine sand of Hawksnest Bay, popular with snorkelers due to its nearby reef. There is no airport; ferries connect the town of 2750 with other U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

We rented a Jeep for a week and it was probably one of the best rental cars we've had on any island. Finally a rental car that didn't have check engine lights on and poor tires!! It was perfect going up hilly terrain and getting around the island all week. Their customer service is friendly and quick. They met us in the parking lot of the ferry upon arrival and paper work was done quickly. Upon our return to the ferry at the end of the week, our rep once again met us there making our return fast and easy. I wouldn't hesitate to rent from them again and highly recommend their rental Jeeps.

I love taking Crown Bay Ferry and I use it as often as I can on my many visits to St John. Novelle and his crew are kind and personable and fun. So nice not to have to long bumpy ride to Red Hook. Just a 5 minute taxi ride to Crown Bay, get a drink at Tickles and have a lovely ride with handsome and gracious Novelle over to ST John. Great start to your trip!

Virgin Islands Ferry - Red Hook

Easy 15 minute ride from St Thomas to St John. You can sit up top and soak up some sun in the day time or star gaze on a night ride back. Or you can take a seat inside especially if it’s raining. There is a lot of room for groups and the seats are bench style with a back rest. They play fun music during the ride as well. The boat leaves every hour so you can easily take a quick ride to St John from St Thomas to shop, spend a day at the beach, enjoy a nice dinner and then head back. Loved it!!
