For a true reflection of the early 19th century that is all but undisturbed, WE highly suggest you take in this site...... If not for the highway noise, you would think you are viewing the church from the time period perspective..... There is no admission and parking is limited to the front gate. There is no guided tour and, to find out the real story/history, we suggest you research ahead of time and, you will be pleased you have when you take in the site. The architecture is amazing, the site pensive and pristine, and the cemetery is astounding for its sculpture, the who is who of Tennessee history. The church is open for a Whit Sunday service which is in reality a Polk Family reunion and, some other event in the Fall... We could not see the interior but, from description little has changed since it was built.... We will find out the protocol of the Whit Sunday event and perhaps have a peek after services are over..... WOW, this is History....

The only surviving residence of James K. Polk other than the White House. Samuel Polk, a prosperous farmer and surveyor, built the house in 1816 while his oldest son James was attending the University of North Carolina. When the future President graduated in 1818, he returned to Tennessee and stayed here with his parents until his marriage to Sarah Childress in 1824. While living in his family’s Columbia home, James practiced law and began his political career by successfully running for the state legislature. Visitors today get to see original possessions of President and Mrs. Polk including furniture, paintings, clothing, documents and White House china.
This is a great tour to take. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about Polk. We learned a lot. You can watch a video about Polk before taking the tour. Afterwards you are free to roam the gardens on your own. Price is very reasonable.

From 1852 to 1904, this was a girls' school that taught the same subjects boys were learning.

Alecia focused on architecture, family history, clothing, china, antiques instead of troup movements like the Carnton House tour guide. We spent over two hours there because we were so engaged but you could do it in less than an hour if you didn't have time. 2019 they plan to open a new museum next door, under construction in July 2018.

Historic downtown Columbia is the classic town square with the iconic courthouse, built in 1906, surrounded by vibrant shops, restaurants, a brewery, and cool places to hang out with friends. But wait, there’s more…adjacent to this beautiful downtown is the emerging Columbia Arts District and the ancestral home of U.S. President James K. Polk to the southwest and the scenic Duck River to the northeast. All this in the growing city of Columbia, population 39,000 or so. An outing in downtown Columbia promises good eats, great finds, live music and relaxing options, equally noteworthy for both the ladies and the guys. Coffee shops, vintage records, book store, barber shops, spas, boutiques, antiques and vintage finds make it worth the trip. If you’re here on the first weekend of the month, be sure to check out First Fridays for live music on the square, inside and outside the shops. And don't miss the annual tradition we celebrate here called Mule Day, happening every April.
First Fridays have been a huge hit! Great oppurtunity to spend some family time or girl time and stroll amongst the shops and pop ups. Love when the weather cooperates so that we can sit out and listen to some of the musicians on the corners.
