Things to do in Carthage, Tunis Governorate: The Best Tours

June 10, 2021 Dorsey Hagwood

With a history stretching back nearly three millennia, Carthage was once the heart of a powerful Mediterranean empire before being leveled by the Romans in the Third Punic War in 146 BC. It sprang from the ashes to become an important early Christian center before again being destroyed by Islamic invaders in the late 7th century. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Carthage is a short train ride from Tunis and has several interesting attractions, like the Punic port and the Carthage Museum.

I took a tour with the group from Carthage to La Goulette. It was a beautiful sunny day, we were a diverse group of all ages. The guides were very friendly and accommodating, and the routes we took were beautiful. We explored a path that goes from Carthage to La Goulette all along the coast, and we explored the residential streets with beautiful homes in La Goulette. I would highly recommend this to visitors and residents alike!

Our guide, Nourri, was fantastic. We were picked up at our hotel and he reviewed the itinerary for the day to make sure it met our expectations before we left. Nouri was extremely knowledgeable, like a history professor, and helped us to appreciate the rise of the Phoenicians prior to Rome’s rule. We started in Kairoouoam, which included a stop at a historical site and and a Mosque that included the tomb of a very important figure of the Islamic religion. Nourri also explained how the Maribou, or village elders were honored and respected. Normally this stop would also include a visit to a rug merchant but we were not interested so we skipped that. The last stop in El Djem, site of the third largest Colosseum, was breathtaking and well worth the 2 hour drive from Tunis. We had lunch at a little cafe overlooking the entrance to the Colosseum, which was owned by a jolly man who saved money by selling postcards so he could eventually buy his own restaurant. He was a really fun man with a bright smile. With 23 years experience, Nouri helped us to appreciate a LOT of the history of the area which really brought the experience to life! If the City of Tunis is a little overwhelming for you, than would highly recommend getting out into the countryside where we felt very safe and welcomed.

Departure to Carthage, founded by the Phoenicians in 814 BC. The earliest settlements of Punic Carthage can sill be seen on Byrsa Hill, just below the renowed Carthage National Museum. Although destroyed by the Romans in 146BC and later built over by them, recent excavation has revealed the foundations of five-story Punic houses, each with its own cistern and drainage system. The most remarkable early remains are the two basins of the Punic Ports, an evidence of the Carthaginian’ mastery of the sea, which fascinated and frustrated the Romans. Another important site of pre-roman Carthage is the Tophet. Sidi Bou said: Perched high atop of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean, this picturesque village is a delightful place for a leisurely stroll through winding cobbled streets. Its trademark white walls, contrasting sky blue doors and ornate window grids, make for a wonderfully inspiring setting. Wander around the boutiques for souvenirs or relax at a cliff-side Moorish café.

Often seen as simply a beach destination, Tunisia has a bucketful of surprising tourist attractions and things to do for those that venture off the sandy shores. This is North Africa wrapped up into one bite-sized package, with vast Sahara dunes, mammoth ancient ruins, and exotic cities that are home to a sprawling tangle of souks. Tunisia was Rome's breadbasket, and the cultural riches the Romans left behind are more than enough reason to visit. But the history of Arab Empires has also bestowed the country with some of the region's most beautiful examples of Islamic architecture. When you've craned your neck at Kairouan's minarets and played gladiator at El Djem, it's time to head into the Sahara to sample the raw, empty beauty of the desert. The sun-soaked beaches of the Mediterranean coastline, fringed by palms and lapped by gentle waves, will still be waiting for you when you get back.

Excellent tour to Kairouan and El Jem with Ghassen for a very reasonable price. Ghassen is a great guide, who speaks English well in addition to several other languages. Ghassen showed us many parts of both places including a stop at a great restaurant (touristic but good). More importantly he is is very friendly, courteous and always was attentive to make sure we got everything we needed. The sites itself are highly recommended and must sees on your visit to Tunisia. However they can take quite long as there is a lot to see so make sure you leave at a good time 8-8:30 and even earlier if you have a third stop as the sun sets by 5-5:30.

A great guide with excellent local knowledge. As a female lone traveller, I felt very comfortable and could freely ask questions; Nadhmi also offered the right amount of space to explore freely. Nadhmi is not just a guide but was really helpful in just getting your bearings: I was based in Tunis (which his not the easiest place to navigate), I was advised to get a sim card which proved invaluable. He really cares that you have an enjoyable experience, made helpful suggestions and of course things to avoid. No reflection on the guide by the system of booking: once your trip is confirmed have a conversation and double check your location with your guide just to make sure your location is where you think it is. Nadhmi is an excellent guide and would highly recommend. Thank you!
